i have recently had some new componets to upgrade my pc and i had to reinstall xp on to my computer, but i had toinstall windows 95 first then my xp, but i couldnt install 95 becasue it didnt have enough drives to support my new stuff so i lent a full copy of xp off a friend and i was wondering could i register it with my own serial number even tho my copy is only a upgrade, without getting both of our copys frozen by Microsoft plz help:confused:

You shouldn't have needed to install Windows 95 to install XP. Usually the Windows XP upgrade setup will only ask for the location of a Windows 95 CD and then continue installing. You should have just put the '95 CD into the drive when asked and pointed the install routine to that drive before continuing with the XP setup.

I don't think you will now be able to use your Windows XP upgrade code to install and register the 'full' XP version.

i did try the 95 but it wouldnt work so ** saying i cant use te code on me m8s copy does each CDGenerate its own installation number or is it a standard thing

There are different versions of XP. The upgrade version uses a different code to the OEM version. You have to use a code that matches the type of CD your using. And then, the code will already be registered to your friends XP install and you can't legally use it on a second PC.

I think that there is an issue when upgrading from 95 to XP.

From 98 you will be fine, but from 95 ?

With XP, there is a few versions.. Home, Pro, MCE, also SP1 and SP" but also non-SP disks too, and there is full and upgrade versions of each, and they all each have their own Serial numbers.

So, no, there is a chance that your Serial number is tied in to one release and your mates disk is another... Thats not a surprise.

Ok, start again, this time, boot from the XP CD and if you have 2 CD/DVD Drives, put the 95 Disk into another CD drawer so the XP installation will look for it to verify the upgrade.
You must NOT have Win95 on the PC ok. You must be tryign to install XP ( Upgrade or not ) to an empty HD

As its an upgrade as we said, it will want you to prove that you own an old version of Windows and you will only need to put in a 98/ME/2K disk to prove you own the disk, Im sure its 95 that is the stopper here, but carry on all *** same.

If it fails, let us know the exact messages you get.

Seems your sort of correct.

MS-DOS, Windows <3.0, 3.1, 3.11 Windows For Workgroups, Windows 95 Retail, OEM Windows 95 (A,B,C), OS/2, BeOS, Solaris (Intel), Linux, xBSD

An upgrade is not possible from these operating system to Windows XP. You can't use upgrade media to perform a clean install with any of these operating systems (excludes Windows 95). Backup any important data you have on the machine to floppy disc or CD-R, then restart with a Windows XP full version CD in. You will need new drivers for your hardware, you also need to check your machine is capable of running XP, most running these operating systems will be below the minimum requirements for Windows XP (with the exception of BeOS, Solaris (Intel), Linux, xBSD).

To run Windows XP you need a 233Mhz Intel Pentium Compatible with 64Mb Ram (128Mb Recommended), 1.5 Gigabytes of hard disk space, A Super VGA display (800x600), Keyboard, Mouse and a CD or DVD Drive.

* Windows 95 Official Retail and OEM CD-ROMs are taken as qualifying media for use with the upgrade version of Windows XP Home or Professional.

Ok, so what type of CD is it?

If its an upgrade then no, that wont work either... You wont be able to upgrade an upgrade from an upgrade... Erm... Sort of?

But other than that, Install XP and when it asks you to prove that you have the previous install, read it properly and it does say that you can use the disk to verify this... Do it and let us know what happens?

OK?

no my windows 98 CD is a full Copy not an upgarde i want to install xp which is an upgrade over the top of it

Start the XP setup and when asked, point the setup to the CD drive that you have just inserted the Windows 9x CD into. You CAN take the XP upgrade CD out of the drive to put in the 9x CD. Then put the XP upgrade Cd back in afterwards,

as i said before it can find the drive the screen thats it is on now say
Device driver not found: 'OEMCD001'
No Valid CDROM device drivers selected.
i was woundering could it be im using a DVD drive in stead of a CD drive or shouldnt it matter

It doesn't have a DOS based driver for the CD drive. Using a DVD drive should make no difference. I take it that you are booting the system from the Windows XP upgrade CD. If so then it should see the Windows 9x CD fine. If not, boot the system from a Windows 9x boot floppy disk and then run the install/setup from a DOS prompt.. You can find many here - www.bootdisk.com .

Use the Windows XP upgrade CD to boot the system. Place the Windows 9x CD in the drive only when asked too, then take it out again after the setup has confirmed that it is a product that can be upgraded.

Install Windows XP to a new hard disk
To install Windows XP to a new hard disk, you must start your computer by using one of the following media: • Microsoft Windows 98/Windows Millennium startup disk
• Windows XP boot disks
• Windows XP CD-ROM
For additional information about how to obtain the Windows XP Setup boot disks, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
310994 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/) How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks
Note If you want to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM, your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive must be configured to do this. For information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, see the documentation that is included with your computer or contact the computer manufacturer.

To install Windows XP to a new hard disk:1. Read the End-User License Agreement, and then press F8.

Note If your Windows XP CD-ROM is an upgrade, you are prompted to insert a CD-ROM of a previous operating system to verify upgrade compliance. Remove the Windows XP CD-ROM, and then insert the CD-ROM from your previous operating system into the CD-ROM drive. You can use the CD-ROM to upgrade from the following versions of Windows:
Windows 98
Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000 Professional
2. When you are prompted for the Windows XP CD-ROM, remove your previous operating system CD-ROM, and then insert your Windows XP CD-ROM.
3. To install Windows XP by starting the computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM, insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
4. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
5. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.
7. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Windows XP Setup.

Stop. Read. Boot from the XP Upgrade disc you have, only swap the 98 CD in when it tells you.

Edit: What he said ^

Dont confuse yourself mate.

Maybe its time to go back to basics...

You have 2 Disks.

1 = Windows 98 - FULL
2 = Windows XP - Upgrade

Are we ok so far?

Ok, stop trying to use the Win98 Disk... Forget about that completely for now, and put it on the side for a minute.

Take the Windows XP disk, and put that into your DVD Drive.

Now, Restart the PC

The first thing that should happen, as it starts to boot from the CD is that it will might give you a small message asking if you want to boot from the CD and of course you press a key to acknowledge this.

Now, when you go through the procedure of installing XP onto the PC, the installation program will tell you that it is an upgrade and so, its at that time you need to then put the Windows 98 CD into the drive... The installation of XP will check the CD and providing its a good Disk, it will carry on installing XP.

It will of course ask you to put the Windows XP CD Back in and it will carry on and give you a nice fresh install of XP.

You do not need to have Windows 98 in the PC already, so stop trying to do it.
You do not need to use the 98CD at all to be honest... You might need it for about 10 seconds but only when XP asks for it, but for all other times, just get it away from the sodding PC FFS

If you have done all of this, and you are still having trouble, then get back to us, or maybe if oyu could have your PC right next to a working PC so that you can tell us EXACTLY what happens, but when we say dont use the Windows 98 CD to boot from, please dont come back to us and tell us what the Windows 98 CD says... WE dont want to know... We want to know about what XP says when you boot from that.
