Hi Every one,

this ight be a silly question, I will hopefully be doing a up grade in the early part of the new year. And was woundering is there a disk one can get from micro soft of hotfixes & updates which i can install directly on to my PC.
As I have a SATA I HD I have to install a silcon SCSI controll driver. Have Micro soft got a fix for this on their Op System XP pro along with force ASPI driver.
As it it will take an age to down load all the fixes from the update centre.

Plus I object to MS trying to install that Verification software. I have a legal copy of XP as I have to register it online.
Though when I did have a problem with XP, MS refuse to help me as I had an ilegal copy of XP Pro as it was an OEM version. I brought from here on OC !
What are MS like ! ! ! ! !

MS don't do that. You could use nLite and download the RyanVM update pack and integrate that into nLite. The RyanVM pack contains all the updates released for XP since SP2. If you haven't heard of nLite then search the forums here for info or look at the Guides section on the nLite site. Either way you should be able to work out how to use nLite.

Not sure about the illegal copy message but Microsoft have never supported OEM versions of Windows so they are correct in not helping.

www.autopatcher.com

Download the full version.

Once you install XP (SP2 streamlined due to nLite of course)
Install drivers.
Run Autopatcher.

-Updates with all of the critical patches.
-Removes Windows Messenger.
-Installs MSN.
-Java Virtual Machine (Sun or MS)
-WMP
etc, etc.

You just select what you want and don't want...
Does all of the reg fixes for status bar always being displayed, speed up network browsing etc.

So after that - Just install your apps.

Fantastic piece of kit. :)

Why will MS on support OEM ?
I was told that an OEM was a retail XP Pro, just with out the Retail box, manual, and wrapping !

OEM copies are supported by the retailer who bought the licence.

So if you built a PC for someone, used an OEM copy - You support Windows on that machine... Not Microsoft.

Or along those lines.
(Don't quote me! ^_^ )

Can I upgrade my OEM XP Pro to Retail Version ?
Or can I buy MS support ?

Yes. it's a completely 3rd party app.
You can select/deselect whatever you want.

It doesn't have the WGA Notifier anyway - It's not a critical update.

@Tysonator - AFAIK you need to purchase a retail version.
Although Google/Forums > MS Support IMHO.

I will also check this site out, sounds too good to be true

not just the box :)

When you buy an OS, you are only purchasing the license to use it. For an OEM license you may only use the OS for the machine you have originally loaded on to and regisitered with. This is bound to the case and motherboard. A retail license allows you to port the OS to another machine providing you have deleted the original copy (i.e you can only have one instance of the OS with one license at all time). Support is not included with OEM but realy, who needs it? Software updates and patches etc are included.

I did read somewhere not so long ago that you can down load all your hotfixes on to a disk and manually install them one by one. I'll have to dig it out. THere is one drawback IIRC, that you have to install them in the correct order and I'm not sure that is too easy.

Short answer

No.

Should be able to get plenty of free support here though:)

Is is an amazing place the forum, though i still think MS are short changing people on the OS. As the vendor can not know a OS inside out.
The forums are great for shared knowledge & experiance.
Long live the forum !
