XP SP3?

Some time ago I read it was supposed to be released in early 2007, but this has now been deferred until start of 2008 apparently.

Probably the reason I was surprised to see 'SP3'.

They'll probably release one - but I doubt many people will notice/care.

It was released earlier in the year, it's called Vista :p

Yes yes i know they are worlds apart so get back on your perch.

I can't think what SP3 would add to the O/S good/new functionality will be saved for Vista, the Firewall with SP2 is sufficient, etc. It doesn't hog memory or CPU usage like it used to either.

I think it has been kept back a bit so it doesn't hinder Vista's selling numbers.

I for one would try it, as i don't want Vista as my primary O/S yet.

well it will save downloading the 70 odd updates you need after a clean sp2 install.... :p

yup

sp2 is awesome, but a lot of updates have been released since, and with the IE7 mess when installing hotfixes, it needs to be released tbh

SP3 for WinXP will happen - remember XP is still a fully supported OS.
However much the anti-MS brigade who say MS force people to upgrade etc will lead you to believe.
However it is not scheduled for release until after SP1 for Vista.

are service packs free? Do you need to reinstall windows?

Yes. No it's just a update. But if your OS needs a fresh install I would create a slipstream disc, saves you running service pack 2 (see link above)

they are free, and you don't need to reinstall

but say you've got a windows xp disc (gold they call the one with no sp's), you can download SP2 and 'slipstream' it into your xp files, and burn a new disc, that is up to date with SP2 :)

-beaten to it

Does XP need a new service pack yet? I was under the impression XP is pretty stable and secure.

A new SP is basically "critical" updates between each SP, although a SP 3 isn't "required" it would come in handy.

My guess is SP3 will be released, but who knows when. 2000 had SP4 well after people switched to XP.

A SP2b would be handy, to include all the new updates. I can't see MS really adding much else feature wise anyway.

XP SP2 rock solid OS, I have used vista as my main OS for one whole week... yes one whole week and I put XP back on today. Vista is a pile of crap they should not of released it. Its very buggy, with windows explorer crashing every time you try moving a file over 1GB. And then firefox and IE crashing. Its terrible, the only thing good about it is the nice theme. But I would rather have xp theme and a solid stable OS, than that thing they call vista which is meant to be a OS. XP does not really need a new Service pack, I have slipstreamed all my updates up to march so I only had 12 updates to install today.

Why do you say XP isn't secure?

bandwaggon to be honest.

no offence but the vast majority of people who say windows isn't secure actually have very little idea of what they are talking about. if its so insecure i would like to see them remotely hack an xp sp2 box.. its not as easy as some people would have to believe.
