XP Update icon

Having a problem with the updating feature in XP. The icon in the taskbar showed downloading updates, but it just disappeared after that- it didn't pop up showing updates are ready for install.

Any idea of a solution?

I've uninstalled Internet Explorer.
I disabled Auto updates, then re-enabled it but chose "notify me but...." icon reappeared and allowed me to choose what to install.

Couldn't you just put IE back on using the windows setup program in Add and Remove Programs.

We all know how Windows Update can be more than temperamental
