Stick with XP or buy sempron?

I have a bit of a dilema

Currently installed on this pc is an Athlon XP-M 300 chip @ 1.8GHz on a 754 board. I want to upgrade it to the best possible chip around for the time being. With the XP being part of the Athlon family, would it be wise to install a Sempron or would there be very little difference?

Your answers would be appreciated :D

I guess you mean an Athlon XP-M 3000+? And socket 462?

Or you mean Athlon 64 3000+, in which case the 4000+ was the fastest model made for the 754 socket afaik.

No its deffo a Mobile AMD Athlon XP-M Processor 3000+ on a ECS 761GX-M754 motherboard

Can someone please help me with my dilemma. There are Athlon XP Chips that are 754 and thats what I have but I dont want to go spending my money on a sempron if there is going to be little difference

Thats strange, but as it is socket 754 you can get an athlon 64 for it (auction sites etc would be the bes tplace to look)

This pc is for the missus. I just need to give it a little more ooooh lala for her.

My little baby i'm building this weekend and cant wait to boot her up ;)

Socket 754 boards would not have an on board memory controller (as they are integrated into the CPU itself with Athlon 64/Sempron 64) so I don't see how an Athlon XP could work in this board, even if it did physically fit.

How about putting up some screenshots of your results from CPU Z? http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

I would but as i'm new on this site it doesnt allow me at the moment otherwise I would. I have one already and have tried but cant :(

You can take screenshots of the CPU tab, and have it hosted for free on http://imageshack.us/ :)

I'm pretty sure there were S754 XP's. Had a "Dublin" core I think.

edit: yep.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Athlon_XP_microprocessors

For traditional processors, including all K7 processors, the multiplier is the value multiplied to the speed of the FSB to get the clock speed of the processor. K8 processors, including the Socket 754 Athlon XP-M, have a memory controller integrated on the CPU die, replacing the traditional concept of FSB. The memory controller runs at the same frequency as the CPU itself, and is able to run the system memory at 200 MT/s (using PC-3200 memory sticks) or at lower speeds (when using slower PC-1600, PC-2100 or PC-2700 RAM). Between CPU and chipset, HyperTransport is used, running at 800 MHz on Socket 754. The multipliers here apply to the 200 MHz system clock frequency, not the HyperTransport speed.

I'm intrigued about what it's performance is like, compared to the XP Bartons.

Yep, most likely one of those Dublin Athlon XP's. Presumably it performs about par with an AMD Sempron 64 2800+ since it has a stock speed of 1.6GHz and level 2 cache of 256kb? I also notice the cpu is overclocked slightly by 160mhz.

A Fully fledged Athlon 64 like the 3400+ or 3700+ should be reasonably quicker. If its a standard office work pc, the question whether the performance increase will be noticed, is debatable.

Thanks for the info :D

I tried to get a bit more out but it locks up. Pity as it still stands loaded @ 43c
