Xp vs Vista? Will Vista ever be the winner?

Crikey! I can remember buying NHL96 when I'd just started using Winows 95 & the difference in speed between running it in dos & 95 was unbeleavable didn't stop the MS monster winning in the end did it? ;)

ms monster was very user friendly....especially to users who knew little about computers.
it made everything that much more easier to do...i do like vista (especially that mahjong titans game) but a lot of things just become work in themselves just to run....oh and whats with the damn mouse lag when running a game ? seriously fix it already

i'l happily go over to vista if they ever get it running as smooth as xp.....a small hit in fps is acceptable but when games like crysis come out which are meant to showcase vista's/DX10's ability and they run like crap in vista and great in xp....it doesnt do MS no favours.

You know what we need? I've been saying it for years...

A completely stripped-down version of Windows, and I don't mean nLite nuked, but geared specifically towards gamers, minimalists and performance addicts. Absolutely everything stripped out but the bare minimums, that includes security etc. that the user can install themselves if they think they need it.

I guess the problem there is that nobody would ever buy the other versions.

It would be cool if there was a OS plainly for gaming, it simply has a selector for installed games and a way manage them, updates, uninstall...etc

Then the main OS for everything else.

Changed from XP to Vista just under a week ago and haven't looked back since. I actually prefer Vista, the appearance is so much better. However there are a few niggles, like the annoying control panel which is just a mess.

Gaming wise I haven't really had any problems but I have recently upgraded from an old S478 P4 so nothing to compare too.

Alas, this is the theory. DX10 is brilliant, the OS it's attached to however frankly isn't. Because of the bloat that is Vista unless you've got stacks of RAM and a stonking CPU the performance hit makes it not worth it.... For now.

Its not as if RAM is expensive nowadays, £35 for 2GB! Not to mention the C2D are dirt cheap and can be overclocked like bonkers too!

Considering some games run the same in Vista as XP then I'd say that's reason to believe it's nothing to do with Vista apparently requiring stacks of ram or a "stonking" CPU.

when the hardware gets better and better, we'll get better performance in vista than in xp, same happened when xp came out, people moaning for ages about gaming performance

vista is a better os (well, when it matures a little it will be)

If you use vista for a short while, you will not want to go back to XP. I have a dual boot and hardly ever run XP. When i do, i almost cringe at how dated it looks. Never had any gaming issues with vista. Just install vista and enjoy a better OS and also enjoy any updates/service packs that come out. :)

Ive been using Vista for a month or so now and I couldnt go back to XP, regardless of the performance increases in games. Theres so many subtle touches in Vista and when youve got it all set up the way you like it, ITS GREAT.

Its just a matter of time that Vista becomes as stable and perform as well as XP.

I reckon XP will be best in the end, with SP3, probably hacked XP version of DX10.

Never gonna happen. :p

Vista is already faster for general use as an OS and it probably will be for gaming in the near future.

Well, not faster for gaming just on par with XP I mean.

I've had vista Home Premuim 64 for around 4months and have not noticed any difference in gameplay. I have not had any probs with Vista (drivers all work fine) and would not consider returning to XP.

IMO if XP and Vista perform the same at this moment in time, Vista will begin to pull away and outperform XP within 6-12months as the drivers become more optimised.

I've had Vista for 8 weeks now. Much prefer it to XP.

I've also had far less crashes under Vista than with XP.

Not come across any game issues with Vista except with Sup Com.

i doubt that MS will release a service pack that will make XP better than it's latest product... would be like shooting yourself in the foot.

i use Vista at work and XP at home. sadly i can't comment on gaming performance but for general work and use vista is great and will get better once all the bugs are sorted out.
Sadly i'm only testing Vista for a possible roll out to the company of around 80-90 users and i don't think it's viable at the moment.

Back to the gaming side. I don't think it's just the OS it is mainly the drivers need to mature more. drivers on XP have had a few years to optimise and they have gotten to a point where performance can't be increased any more. Vista is a new OS and drivers will need a year i think before any major gains are to be had.

Why is this?

MS will stop producing XP OEM copies in January.

Although I've had teething problems with Vista it's been a lot less grief when I upgraded from Windows 98 to XP. Then, everyone was complaining and the issue made headline news. Yet here we are 5 or so years later saying the same thing about Vista.

I have a duel boot with vista and xp, and I rarely boot into xp anymore. As for games I have had no problems so far, there are no noticible difference in frame rates. I would recommend vista anyone, also I have bought 3 new laptops and a pc for work and for each I went for vista.

I think I died and woken up in 2002 and the XP Versus Windows 98 argument is in still happening in disguise...

Does any one believe that from 2003 onwards 98 was the better gaming platform? Does anyone really believe that when the 2nd gen dx10 games come out there will be any point stick with XP?

Reminds me of a quote in *** Black Hawk Down book "We learn from History... that we do not learn from history..."
