Xsara Picasso - wife wants one, what they like to run/own?

Not really a concern in a people mover. You get one or the other, not both. If you get the size to carry 7 people plus all thier luggage to go to the airport for a 7 day vacation, there's no way in hell you're going to get anything that handles.
Performance
See above. But then again, anything that can haul 7 people and thier luggage is going to go like a raped ape on a bad hit of acid with just you in it!! :)
Also see above.
When you have multiple kids, you are no longer concerned about image. Hell, you don't even need multiple kids. Have you seen what I drive?!?!
Equipment
Can't really beat an MPV for "toys". So you're kinda shooting your agrument down with that one....

He didn't ask if its a concern, he said there were no disadvantages. Plus I'm not talking about 7 seater MPV's. I'm talking about the 'midi MPVs' with only 5 seats.

Errr, you sure can. I don't think any of the Xsara Piccasos, for example, were even available with leather seats let alone heated electric leather memory seats like on the C5 Exclusive..

Xsara Picassos and Scenics (Scenic II excepted) are not exactly well endowed with kit.

True, I'm not familiar with your market over there. I was going from my experience over here. The minivans (as we call them) all come MUCH more heavily equipped than any comparably priced car can even come close to.

And for the most part, they get about the same fuel mileage as a comparable car as well.

Plus the fact that you're sitting in an upright position (much better for your back), they are SO much more comfortable to drive. It's like driving a LazyBoy recliner with wheels!! :p

We don't really have a market of "midi MPV's" over here. In fact I can't really think of a single one, unless the Subaru Forrester falls in that category......

Exactly, cos they are pointless and nasty :p

Forester is far too good to be compared with Renault Scenics and Xsara Picassos ;)

Ew, actually we are getting close. May I present the Chevy Aveo??

Most of these MPV's are utterly pointless.

as spoken by some1 who's never had to take a baby on holiday with them. I agree that MPVs are pointless when you've got toddlers that are potty trained and can walk everywhere

but with babys its a whole different matter. First you've got all the usual crap that parents have to bring along, pushchair, changing stuff, umpteen changes of clothes, toys to amuse them with, not to mention all the stuff you yourself want to bring. MPVs have a much larger load space

with the seats down, load space to the roof is 1658 litres on a C5
with the seats down, load space to the roof is 1969 litres on a Picasso

plus on a picasso you have the option to remove the rear seats invididually as required. with all 3 removed you have 2128 litres. The estate just cant match it.

and thats before we go onto the feeling of space inside the car, and the improved visibility offered by the higher seats.

Ive owned my picasso for over a year now, and its been heavily damamge in crashes twice in that time (neither my fault, both times all un-insured losses were recovered) and each time all the occupants were un-harmed. Its been cheep to run and reliable. So far not had a single breakdown, and all its had spent on it is a £120 Service and Mot and a new set of tyres at £35 a corner. its comfy, spacious, practical and easy to drive.

Others have had differing experiences with picassos. Think its about 60 out of 100 in Auto Express' reader survey. One of the criticiisms levelled against it in that is performance and they have a point. Diesel engines are slower than petrol. and fastest petrol is 1.8 and does 120 and 0-60 in 10.00 and mid gear acceleration is sluggish, but then again, it does me, as the car i had before this was an 8v 1.4 polo that was even worse at 0-60 in 14 ....

he speaketh the truth. Spec list on the Exclusive is limited to Climate control, ABS, automatic wipers, full electric windows, CD player, Fogs

Stuff like satnav is an optional extra on all trims, and leather electric seats is a no no.The older ones are even worse. Exclusives are 2002 onwards, anything prior to that will be at most an SX, which only has normal Air con, front electric windows only, and no automatic wipers.

Yea but how much is actually usable load space?

Unless you have lego brick style lugage and can interlock them together the moment you open the boot your stack is going to fall out, thats the biggest failing with mpv's they have good passenger room but fail to account for the luggage each person will bring with them.

Having been in and driven a couple of Xsara Picasso's, I have to agree with Fox, they just aren't nice. Ok, I have no kids, but I was one a while back. We had no problem shifting a trailer tent, back full of gear and a full grown springer spaniel arounf in a Rover SD1 or a Sierra GLX - it's just an excuse that it's better for the kids. A 5 series BMW Tourer whips these tin boxes like a naughty house boy at a public school. As does the C5 Exclusive.

The worst thing though, by far, is the rate at which they seem to fall to pieces and look horribly scruffy.

picasso has completely flat fload space. and the sides are pretty flat as well. so id say all of that is pretty usefull

if your old enough to remember it, you werent a baby. If you read my post i mention the key thing is having younger children. When you dont have a pushchair and toys etc.. to bring you dont need nearly as much space. i fully intend to change my picasso once ryan no longer needs his pushchair. he doesnt really need it now, but finds places like meadowhall too much of a drag after an hour or two and its unfair to drag him round while his little legs cant walk anymore.

I wonder how my Mum managed with me and my sister in a Mk2 Escort RS2000. Must have been sheer hell for her, given nowadays you can't have kids without an MPV :p

your grandad also probably managed with a cortina that had drum brakes and did 0-60 in a week or so

wouldnt want to manage with a car like that now would you ? ;)

im not saying that an MPV is essential with children. Just dont say theres no point in it cos your not parents of young children and dont know what its like.

It just seems a terrible shame to buy something which is, in every possible way, nothing more than the motoring equivilent of a dishwasher. A tool.

Especially when something a tad more enjoyable is 90% as practical.

I mean, you are 24. Surely you are not old enough to throw motoring away and buy something thats purely practical and nothing more?

the picasso is going in a year or two to be replaced with a scooby once my points have gone and ive got a few more years NCB.

the picasso was briliant while we had a small child and the extra space was of use to us. Now we dont need to bring nearly as much stuff round with us, so a normal saloon will be enough for us

truth be told, id change today if i had the money, since we hardly use the full capacity of the picasso anymore.

Seriously looking for a Scenic or Zafira for my wife. Looked at the Picasso but was not impressed with the build quality, very flimsy in comparison.

They do make life a lot easier if you have kids, especially when trying to get your toddler strapped in when hes determined to escape :D. I'm looking for a 1.6 auto as Mrs Leghorn suffers from Rhuematoid Arthritis, so the raised seat height will be a god send for getting herself and the kids in and out.
