I had an 07 R1 - long story on how it got into bike heaven, and the posts are probably kicking around somewhere, so I won't go over old ground and rake up graves
One word to sum it up - MENTAL!
It was my first litre bike, coming from an 06 ZX6R 636 before that (which was my first ever bike), so it was a proper eye opener - the torque is what shocked me the most, even just pulling away you could feel the power (droooooool....)
Anyway. Unless you're a track day riding god, or a complete nutter on the road, you will never ever get the most out of it - 110 in first gear (tested on a private road) means it is way above NSL before you've even changed up. And on another private road I saw an indicated 185 and still had more to go; though I have no idea what that would be in real speed terms... 170 odd maybe.
When you weren't trying to explore the limits on it, it was an absolute joy to ride, so easy to flick around, easy to scrape pegs and sliders with minimal effort and endless power - though having a sexy 675 Daytona now, makes me realize how rubbish the R1 was around town; though I guess most I4s suffer the same - you either leave it in a grabby first or a near stalling second.
I changed the front sprocket to lop off that mental first gear and give me a usable boost in revs - helped remove a lot of clutch feathering around slow points, so if you're lucky enough to get an R1, do this!
Fuel wasn't too bad - depending how you rode it, anything from 80-90 before reserve, up to 120+, but reserve was good for exactly 19.5 miles before I ran out at the side of the bloody road!
It looks like Dame Edna according to my mates, but I love the looks, the shark nose (mine was blue) and those side wings
A DB screen helps, but I think the standard one suits it far better, it just looks sexy as hell.
Luminous yellow wheel tape is acceptable on the blue ones
And lastly.... arrrrrggggghhhh, I want another!!!
Edit: that colour scheme you show is the best imo, but with black seat pads instead
Edit 2: you may find yourself corrupted, as I was, having the power so easily on tap.... not good if you want to keep on the good side of the rozzers!
Edit 3: the newer style ones look fat, fat and ugly, but god does that engine sound good! Oddly, when they first came out, all the specs for them (power etc) weren't far off the model it saw out.
