are yate loons honestly that much quieter in real life? Just that on paper it seems one of the noisest for its stock speed:

Noctua NF-P12 Vortex-Control Quiet Case Fan 1300rpm - 19.8dB - 54.3cfm - £15.26 Inc VAT

Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E Silent Fan 1200rpm - 20.1dB - 49cfm - £12.91 Inc VAT

Xilence XPF120R Red Wing 1400rpm - 21.2db - 68cfm - £7.04 Inc VAT

Yate Loon D12SL-12 1200rpm - 28dB - 47cfm - £5.86 Inc VAT

it even moves the leastairflow.....

so yeah, whats so great about them? Looking at paper value the Xilence is best.

Edited in pricing, ok its a HUGE difference but the top two competitors can knock a couple quid off them. But I would say the Xilence are still best value for money.

things to note:
-people who have the fan have speculated that the cfm on the xilence may not be as good as the claimed 68cfm.
-the Noctua NF-P12 comes with a lot of extras such as rubber fan attachments, as well as the usual screws, and two in-line resistors to change fan speed, hench the higher price
 
I don't have experience of the Xilence but the Noctua are definitely quieter whilst still shifting decent air, the 1200rpm Scythe is about the same as the Yate Loon 1200rpm fan in my opinion.
 
I have 6 Yate Loons (D12SL-12) in a Coolermaster CM690 and even on high I can hear my Hard drives over them.

Cheap and as quiet as a lamb ;)

Shift some air also. On high they knock the case temps alone down by 5c.
 
Personally, I'd take the manufacturers cfm figures with a large pinch of salt. What I do know is that Yate Loons for the performance vs noise vs price cannot really be beaten. Also, there figures tend to be nearest the mark in the reviews I've seen.

I've had most makes of fan over the years, and the fact that I currently own 12 Yate Loons in various guises speaks volumes. The money I've wasted on 'high end' fans makes me cry!
 
I was doubtful about the Yate Loons but got four DS12L's on Ebay for £3.35 each and they really are very good. If you have them at full speed they are very noisy but on a fan controller or 7v mod they are nice and quiet. I have mine connected to a Zalman ZM-MFC2 fan controller and running at 900rpm and i can't hear them at all. Pretty quiet up to 1200rpm while still shifting some decent air.

Be aware that the Noctua's aren't black so, if the fans are going to be obviously visible from outside the case (say in a top-mounted rad scenario) then you might want to steer clear of them.
 
7volted the yate loons are lovely.

Although, so is everything else i'm sure.





...i wonder if a 7v mod would work on the girlfriend...
