Yaya Toure - £221,000 A WEEK!

I guess you guys would turn it down I guess? I know I wouldn't.

Good on the bloke I say.

I don't think anyone is saying they would turn it down, but if I'm taking home at least £100,000 a week out of that clump then I'm donating a sizeable amount to a decent cause as well. I wonder how much he is going to give to charities.

Why should anyone donate to charity because they've earned so much? I've seen this come up loads in conversations about big earners. I'm a believer in donations, but for altruistic reasons moreover the numbers involved.

If I was Toure I'd play for that contract then retire for the rest of my life (while walking around with a big fat suitcase full of cigars and cocaine)

So that's around £11.5m a year pre-tax earnings? If I can get a video of me kicking a ball in some kind of a straight line does anyone have Gary Cook's email address or phone number?
Kinda ironic, they're the biggest club in Manchester, the richest club in Manchester and are fast becoming the most hated Manchester Club!

I hope Mancini stuffs it up and they fail to qualify for the Champions League!
Haha. :D Got to love being a Utd fan. We can't ever screw up. Chelsea and City just make us look good.

In what capacity are you using biggest?
Ego. ;)

Thank you for asking the obvious

(the only answer I can come up with is bank balance, which is "richest" lol).....or " nuisence" lol
Or ego. :p

Ridculous and I bet it'll be tax free or some scam.

Speaking about Portsmouth, why haven't they been shut down yet?

If they had been any other business they'd be wound up, so why so special? What true benefit do they bring?

The guy is gonna have money coming out of his ass. The least he can do is donate a million to Cancer Research or something. It'd probably be better than sending it to some ****ty money pit African child foundation which probably ends up getting spent on guns anyway.

I really don't see the issue. Think of it this way, thats a an extra £110k per week going into the tax coffers that wasn't there before hand. We will be out of this recession before we know it courtesy of the un washed masses at Middle Eastlands :p

Seriously though, he is an alright player but is he worth that kind of money each week then not a chance in hell. Plus another thing to bear in mind with these mind blowing weekly wages is that it's a structured wage. Only a very small percentage of of the weekly wage will be attributed to Premier League games and the taxation that goes with it. It will more than likely be loaded towards European appearances away from home which will attract much less tax.

Isn't there the chance of a wages arms race? Perhaps just at Man City or Chelsea but if a player wants more than so and so to sign then what happens after that?

That's assuming Manchester City progress through the play offs for the Europa League?

An obscene amount of money, but anyone saying he can't command a first team slot at Barca might want to see how they are dropping non Spanish players constantly. Next season, barring no more transfers, they will have 8/11 homegrown. (Messi, Alves, Marquez/Maxwell/Abidal being their non Spanish starters, as Zlatan will not get a place with Villa at the club, regardless of his idiotic transfer fee)

I'm taking this with a rather large pinch of salt - I don't think that figure has been confirmed anywhere and I'd be surprised if it was correct.

I hate to agree with FIFA/UEFA but the proposed rule on linking wages to a club's footballing revenue is far more practical than a salary cap.

It would be very difficult to account for currency fluctuations with a salary cap, let alone tax and the cost of living in various countries.

Why can't a salary cap work in Europe if it works in North America? I know they're big on their baseball in Japan as well, not sure if they have a cap there too but if they did then it would be interesting.

If anyone wants a quick read up on some of the basic rules then have a look at these articles:

http://proicehockey.about.com/od/learnthegame/a/nhl_salary_cap.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salary_cap

As far as I know there's a few sports, not just in America that have salary caps, and if you look at the amount of money is in U.S sports I don't see how it's an inconceivable idea.

Footballers are paid too much?

What about movie stars that pick up XX million for a couple of months work?

The sports in North America with a salary cap are all franchies with similar income streams and more importantly no promotion or relegation. The players there also don't have an opportunity to earn more playing elsewhere.

That's a completely different topic unless you misread the thread title?

So?

They both provide entertainment.

If Manchester City want to waste that much money on a run of the mill player, that's fine. No sweat off my back.

Why are people so bothered about how much a footballer gets paid?

Because the multi billionaire owners at City haven't got much stopping them ensuring victory through superior economic power. Nobody else can compare with their spending power, not even Real Madrid. Barcelona are ****ed and have had to borrow money just to pay wages, United aren't look like a financial force either and I don't think any of their fans are under any illusions that they need signings shortly, Liverpool are looking rough and Arsenal rely on mostly bargains anyway. The point is that this is the football forum and we are discussing the impacts that signings like this could potentially have on other clubs in the EPL and eventually Europe.

We aren't discussing whether you think Tom Cruise is overpaid because it has no bearing whatsoever on this topic.

Maybe, just maybe, football clubs should look after their money and balance their books a little better.

Manchester City, paying over the top odds for players and paying them lots of money isn't going to send the footballing world to the dogs. City can throw money at things until they get what they want, cool, it didn't work last season.

Maybe, it's time for clubs to stop spending beyond their means and not feel forced to splash out on players and use the sky money as a constant source of income, maybe this whole thing will teach them to use their youth system better and give younger players a chance.

Football clubs are free to pay players as much as they want, to be honest it doesn't bother me if it's £100 a month or a £100'000. Why should it bother anyone else other then the people who pay the wages and sort the books?
