Ok so my pathetic little x2 3800 needs itself more overclocking. Atm its at 2.45ghz (from stock of 1.8), turned the voltage up by about 0.5 I think, and put the ram multiplier down so its only at 450mhz. Alls fine and stable atm. Last time I notched it up to a few mhz more it boots fine but gets into the habit of switching the pc off after a couple of minutes.

Basically I am wondering whos fault this is? the voltage, ram or something more sinister like mobo?

i think your pc is locking up and restaring to prevent damage. not being a cpu guru myself, it's probably best to wait for another reply.

what socket is that? i thought a socket 939 +3800 was 2.0ghz ? well mine was. Is that DDR1 you are using? if so when you say 450mhz do you mean 225mhz as cpu-z would show it? thats about the limit for most ddr1 memory. Post your specs

You can add up to about 1.5v to 1.55v on air with the X2. You can push it further but you're better to play in the safe specs till you understand how these chips can be abused. Better to play it safe.

I had my X2 3800+ @ 2.8Ghz with 1.475 - 1.5v (different motherboards wanted different voltages). A good start would be to invest in a cheap air cooler like the Arctic Freezer Pro. This is MUCH better than the stock AMD one.

What to do is to put the voltage up until it's stable and if it doesn't stabilize before you hit the 1.55v or 1.5v then it's going to be the RAM. Either the RAM would need a little more voltage or you would have to slacken the timings of your RAM.

Here is an example. At DDR400 my timings were 2-3-3-6. When running at DDR466 I was using the timings of 2.5-3-3-7. Otherwise the PC would not boot. I had the RAM at 2.5-3-3-6 at first and every little while my PC would reset. Changed the last timing from 6 to 7 and that was the sweet spot and my PC was flying compared to stock.

Hope this helps.

Sorry I shoulda mentioned, I brought a tuniq cooler. Fun stuff. atm on load the temps about 55C, and about 35 idle. core is at 1.45v atm, socket 939, DDR1 corsair, decent stuff when it was around! I will try more voltage

If the RAM is DDR400, clock it back to that or lower to make sure it's the cpu that's causing you problems. You can try to overclock it later when the cpu is stable. If it's DR500 then it shouldn't be a problem as long as the timings are correct.

Then push the vcore up a little at a time as J.D says. THen when it seems stable run orthos and core temp to check the temp of the cores at full load. Particularly looking for a large difference from one core to the other and keeping under 60-65c if you can.

Good advice ;). The temps i was talking about were the ones you see in Everest, Speedfan etc. Core temp then it's higher. I should have mentioned that but once the fingers start going there's no stopping them lol.

Core temp is the 'correct' temperature and you should ignore the others, as long as you have the latest version you can be sure that it will support your cpu.

My 3800+ needs 1.61V to run at 2500Mhz and will not go one Mhz higher, it just locks up the system and it is not temperature related as I have watercooling.

I've been overclocking long enough to know the differences between Everest/speedfan and Coretemp. As I already said I just typed a fast reply ;).

@ Dutch guy, that seems to be a terrible overclocker if nothing else is holding you back. Is your RAM timings fine?, HTT set to x3 or x4?. The worst result I got was 2.6Ghz with 1.55v with the first X2 3800+ I bought.

You should maybe think about selling it and getting another CPU. I got 2.8Ghz with my Freezer Pro so if you got a good chip you could run a lot faster. Sorry to hear about that chip but at least you still have a decent grunt in your machine.

I tried everything possible to get it higher and nothing works, my CPU needs a lot of voltage and even then is limited to 2500Mhz.

I thought about getting another one but decided to just wait until I want a new build, but so far I haven't found the need to upgrade yet, it still runs fine for me.

Mate, that was just information for oxygene. I wasn't trying to be sarcastic or anything.

Dutch Guy, I had one like that. It wouldn't do more than 2.5ghz but with a lower multi and higher fsb it did do 2.7ghz in the end. Have you tried that?

Well it's a shame that it won't go further but if it does everything you need then there's nothing to worry about :).

I apologise for that outburst. First posts of the day and I'm a little groggy still :o.

Tut Tut J.D. Drinking on a school night eh! You'd never catch me doing such a thing. :D

LMAO :D - I'm old and decrepit (26) no school for me but thinking about hitting college again. Needing a life change. (Oh and I've a waccy baccy hangover lol too much smoking and 3 hours sleep)

old and decrepit!! I'm 30 chap. :(

Drinking on a school night's just a phrase mate. I might pop round next Sunday though.........sounds like a good night in! ;)

Lol I know the expression but thought you were younger and still at School/College/Uni (my bad). At least you give off the younger essence ;). You're more than welcome, just bring munchies and I'll provide the rest :).

I have a 3800 x2 manchester it will do 2.6GHZ / 295FSB at 1.55V but over 2.6 i can't get it to pass on both cores , it fails core 1 within 30mins. Any advice? . My memory is setup correctly and its only running at 241mhz the default for this ram is 250 , its on a 166 divider / 333

My cooler is one of those big thermaltake things , huge silver with pipes coming out of it and a big fan on top. I've even tried updating the bios to the lastest modified bios by Merlin
