How is it done folks?

Chris, shan and their three daughters go for a day at the Olympics. The parents watch the fencing and the girls have seats for the gymnastics, at a total cost of £235. Michael and his four fiends meet them there. He has spent £135 on the five tickets and plans to see the fencing with Chris and Shan, while his friends enjoy the handball. However two of michaels friends decide to swap the tickets with two of the girls, giving the girls £60 to cover the price difference.what is the cost of each event ticket??

You re-write the English sentences as a series of equations. Then you solve them. If I wasn't watching TV right now, I'd be more helpful :p

That question is badly written. Does it mean Michael paid £135 to see the fencing AND paid for his friends to see the handball as well all inclusive of £135? It's not explained well at all.

In reality there are only two tickets, Chris and Shan are wondering how to break the news to their daughters. Michael has yet to tell his friends that their tickets will cost £1500 each.

What's the equation though!?

I'm bored so why not:

Fencing = x
Gymnastics= y
Handball = z

2x + 3y = 235 (1)

x + 4z = 135 (2)

2z + 60 = 2y
y - z = 30 (3)

(3) * 4 , 4y - 4z = 120

(2) + (3) , x + 4y = 255 (4)

(4) * 2 , 2x + 8y = 510

(4) - (1) , 5y = 275

y = 55

2x + (3*55) = 235
2x = 70
x = 35

55 - z = 30
z = 25

so:

Fencing = £35
Gymnastics = £55
Handball = £25
