Year old pheasant

I prepared some duck confit the other day and afterwards I was left with a load of rendered duck fat.

I thought to myself that would be nice to cook that pheasant in the freezer in. I looked at the pheasant and it is from the season in 2011! So it is actually about a year and a half old!

Is it likely to still be edible? Or should I kill it with fire?
 
It's really dependent on the temperature of your freezer. If it's colder than -18 centigrade it *could* be edible. Bear in mind, the generally accepted time something will last in the freezer is 1 month.

Personally, I'd defrost it and smell it. I'm a strong believer that the human olfactory system is the best judge in whether something is edible. Millenia of evolution and all that..

If you do eat it, make sure it is thoroughly cooked.
 
Probably be fine! Defrost it and see what it's like - might be a bit freezer burned but in confit it'll be fine. I'd skip the salting stage and just get straight in there with the fat :cool:

It is? I'm sure I read a raw chicken was okay for a year, cooked chicken a month (due to less water in the cooked chicken - I suspect this could be more a food quality than food safety distinction though)

I think it's generally a quality thing yeah.

Lots of people make the assumption that it's a safety thing though. I guess if you had a really really dodgy freezer and you were in and out of it all the time it could be an issue.

I've eaten meat frozen for longer than a year. It didn't taste amazing but it was okay.
 
I've eaten stuff that's been in the freezer for several years with no adverse effects.

As has been said - use your nose - that will tell you if it's safe to eat :) (bear in mind the quality won't be as good as something frozen for a lesser amount of time though).
