This is my second Maxtor 250 gig DiamondMax Plus 9 drive failing on me. Its full of data too and I have just ran a diagnostic on it and it told me the drive was failing, Im really peeved off with Maxtor now. 
Yet another DiamondMax Plus 9 failure.

These drives run very hot, mine is at 56c and looking at the data sheet 55c is the optimal operating temp. And I have a 80m fan blowing on it too.

Ive just had a 250gb Maxline die, pretty much the same drive i believe

mines failing n all.. its started making a knocking sound. Its happened to me before as well with 2 other seperate maxtor drives. Its still in warranty tho and is useable so im currently copying all my stuff from there, then il go see if it can be rma'd.
Ive been using mine in an Icybox external case... not recommended as i think this is whats caused it to fail.. the icybox (contrary to its name) does not keep the drive very cool.. that and the fact ive been hammering the drive silly for a while means its just failed.
Im gonna give up on Maxtor.. theyve had their 3rd chance.. see what WD or Seagate are like... hopefully a lot more resilliant!

I don't understand how people get all these problems, not one of mine has died on me yet, i run an 80/160/200, all stuck together in my v1000, and they're operating fantastically still, 1 1/2 year on.

To be fair mine is something like 3-4 years old and has been running pretty much 24/7 for that period, good job its a maxline and has a 5 year warranty
Ok after I have transported nearly 250 gig of data from my drive, I ran the test again and it told me there where errors on the drive and did I want to fix them. I did fix them and it then said the drive had passed.
So it seems maybe the drive might be ok? I might run it again and see what happens. If you say no to fixing the errors it tells you the drive is failing, the reason I said dont fix the errors in the first place was I needed to backup the drive first, if that makes sense?

Maxtor Diamondmax 10 300gb sata II
OK you lot. I have got problems with maxtor too, my original Maxtor HDD packed up (200gb) sata 1. loosing all data. just two weeks out of warranty. Oct/2005. Purchased new sata II 300gb back in november 2005, since then i have received THREE new HDD's via RMA's because the original new purchase was faulty. Fourth HDD arrived four day's ago. previous three would not formatt/partition. this new one also has problems, ie passes all tests using Maxblast 4 / Maxblast installer. repeated attempts to get to windows setup has been difficult. during windows set up system hangs. examining 286182mb disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on ATAPI... Any suggestions. BIOS and CMOS toggled. I am a newbee. but boot priority's have been changed to resolve/correct. Present HDD maxtor 120gb ide borrowed so i can operate.`Present system AMD Athlon 64 freezer. Gforce fx5600 ft dvi tv. DFI Lanparty ut nf3 250gb. and lots of others i can't identify YET!!
