Yet another project....The uncrashed spitfire

Awesome thread this, obviously know what you are doing. I'm having enough trouble simply doing a gearbox change on my Rover. Tho don't have many tools hehe. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see that engine back in the car :D

Not really know what im doing just read lots and ask lots of questions. Im very good at remembering how things went together.

Cam timing is now set, couldnt believe how easy it is....

Find Top Dead center on piston 1
rotate the crank 103 degrees from that point
leave crank where it is
put the cam follower in and a pushrod
measure the highest lift on the cam by roating it
attach the chain to the crank where it is and the cam at its highest lift.

job done!

Youd think id learn to check parts people sell me by now given all the crap bits i have got! But yet again!!!

Picked up new fuel pump from chic doigs yesterday after having a long chat with ian him saying that with this pump i didnt need the spacer block and it was a direct fit. So i trust him and fit it!

Gues what it doesnt fit turn the engine over it bends the arm of the pump and puts a nice scratch in my new cam.

****** off is the understatement of the year.

you can see the difference in the levers.

Right well cleaned it up put the timing cover on and replaced the cam and placed the cam followers in, once that was done headgasket is on.

some piccies...

Last photo included the newly painted inlet manifold with added take offs for the megajolt.

Well god that was an ordeal, its amazing how heavy the engine gets once everything is bolted to it, but its up next to the car at last.

Only one small foo pah this time, my cluts of a brother knocked the engine on a fence post and bent the back plate around the starter, but thats not a major deal, i'll unbolt it and straighten it tomorrow.

Engine crane is only partialy assembled just to take the weight off the bent engine plate.

Just need to nip up to chics tomorrow have a chat with him about the fuel pump and pick up 11 sump bolts!! (how can i loose 11!!!) and a sump plug.

Taaaadaaaaaa

What a pain in the ass to get on the input shaft, definatly not a job to do on my own again, especially not with stitches in my leg doh!

Fairly stands out me thinks lol

yeah these two videos are just from me heat soaking the head gasket so i can torque it down properly. Next up add the cooling system and then i get to run the cam in.

RESULT mate! Well done.

I'm with you on the input shaft malarky. I put my last one in by myself without a crane. Er, at what point did I decide that would be a good idea? :D

yeap its good to have it running, but im still a good few months off driveable.

Just annoying about the fuel pump after all the hastles i had with repro ones.

Lack of updates recently as i have been messing around with firstly the fuel system, which when i put the electric pump on it sprang more leaks than a sprinkler system. Mainly just due to the high pressure leading to the regulator. Just waiting on some fuel clips arriving so i can run a braided hose front to back replacing all the old pipes.
In the mean time i started to rewire my fuse box again and one think led to another and i have ended up re-wiring the whole car.
Side project was re-covering the dash, got rid of the wood, didnt like it, alright for a cruiser but this car aint gonna be a cruiser.

And back in the car in the midst of wiring chaos

IMG_2972.JPG

Every wire now soldered, pic was from halfway through, just fog lights and cooling fans to wire in now and lots of tidying it up.

Well its all now in, it all works, few things to tidy but wiring is done!

Fuel lines plumbed in tomorrow and hopefully the spray guy will come round give me the final estimate. Not long now till we can go racing!

Fuse box is messier than i would have liked but its practical, all wires are easily accessed, note the correctly coloured and rated wires, just need to work out the currents and put correct rated fuses in now.

Battery is in the boot, battery box bolted down (the wrong way round doh!) , fuel pipes and new electric pump sorted.

Interior is finished being tidied now, just needs some cleaning now.

Engine bay all tidied up, need a new header tank, and need to buy new cooler hoses as my pump isnt sitting right.
