Yet another project....The uncrashed spitfire

You'll get the hang of it!

Come to think of it I was pretty nervous when I got the replacement, I got my dad to drive it home and I checked it over pretty carefully before taking it out. The feeling soon passed though :)

Finally found a fanbelt that fits after going nuts at halfords for selling belts which are the wrong size. Whats the point in selling a 915mm belt when its only 905mm!!
Got the hoses all clamped up fanbelt bolted up, sensors in place, water pump bolted in ready to test, then it started to rain and i couldnt shut the bonnet.

arrrgggg..... water pump catches the wheel arch by a bawhair, will need to modify the mount tomorrow.

Still hoping to fill the new system tomorrow, check the water pump flows and there is no leaks then i can test the megajolt.

fingers crossed i get a day without problems.

Well after much frustration and spanner flinging, she runs, a problem caused by carbs of all things stopped it firring.

Such a good feeling when all this wirring comes into its own and the engine springs into accurate 3D mapped ignition which i edit on the laptop.

Very Cool

Respect to you dude, you are one of the chosen :) (even if it is two wheels too many;) )

Realised its been a while since my last update, took a couple of weeks off bodywork cause i was getting impatient, finally started again on thursday.

Got the new rear valance on which is a pain in the behind, and got the whole rear in primer! im round the corner at last! yay literally, just one rear wing and one sill to go.

Still lots of prep work to do once the last panels are done, but im finally seeing progress, its nice to have the car back on four wheels and driveable.
First time i've driven it in 5 months, it runs like cack, smokes like hell but it bloody goes and i've got one heck of a cheesy grin.

heres the front end, no change here:

Looking good so far. Loving that megajolt system, how much are they all-in then?

its about £100 for the actual megajolt unit, then about £40 for all the ford edis bits from a scrappy, then £20 for a new set of ht leads from a ford orian and £20 for the trigger wheel. Then your laughing.

Comin' on great - if you can, would probably be worth your while to put a balanced number of small nuts & bolts to locate the timing wheel to the pulley wheel, along with the welds. Not uncommon for the welds to crack and the timing disc to make a bid for freedom, smashing bits up and bringing you to a swift halt, whereas some bolt fixings just prevent it going awol :)

really? i know of 5 or 6 racers who have been using welded trigger wheels for a couple of years now trouble free.

It's happened to a few people I know and Dave Walker's written about it too - it only takes a brittle weld and BANG! :D

One of those "I'd rather that not happen" affairs :)

:oRespect, It's great that you are fighting back after the crash. I've not experienced injury like that from an accident but I have experienced the incredible low of wrecking my pride and joy.

Well the rush is on before i have to go to work.
Started on the other corner, here is the second rear wing off.

Just a wee bit of rust to repair this time

IMG_1790.JPG

Quite impressive how rust free the inner sill is.

Here is the new wing on, the quality of the replacement wing was crap and it had to be flexed quite a lot to get it to fit right, hence i had to use lots more power on the welder and hence the amount of bird poop around the weld.

On to today, tackling my last body panel! whoohooooo!!!! its been heck of a quick job to completely re-shell this spit, taken me 3 months and half of that i was one armed with one in a cast.

IMG_1806.JPG

here shown with the POR15 applied to the inner sill, wee bit of rust to weld up tomorrow but should have the sill at least tacked in place by the evening.

The old sills were full of waxoyl but if they arent done properly in the first place then it has no affect, these old sills the waxoyl just collected all the rust.

Weather has beaten me today, just as i got the new sill to fit with the help of a rubber mallet, they really dont make pattern parts as they used to.

Anyway, new toys keep arriving every day.

My new harness arrived, im impressed feels like it should be attached to a parachute, so much better quality then the old sabelt one i was cut free from.
