I am looking to use this in my HTPC but I also need it to be capable of rendering 3D out in its spare time and maybe something to play OC with. The following is what I have laying around already

PSU - Antec True 420W
Case - Akasa Zen (black and modded for better air flow)
GFX - Either GF4 Ti4400 or Quadro 980XGL
Drive - 30GB WD 8MB cache

What I think I could do with is as follows though a little above budget (I told the wife it would be about £200 although I could argue I meant without VAT ;) )

GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5 £74.99
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego (Socket 939) - OEM £79.99
Asrock 939 Dual-SATA2 (Socket 939 & Upgradable to AM2) AGP & PCI-Express Motherboard £37.99
Zalman CNPS9500-AM2 Aero Flower (Socket AM2/939/754) CPU Cooler £29.95
Subtotal £222.92
Shipping (City Link Parcel Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri)) £8.25
VAT £40.46
Total £271.63

Can anyone make it cheaper with almost the same bang for my buck... pound?

You could get the Artic Freezer 64 and save £15 or so right away, I'd also consider the San Diego 3700 OEM as that is £70 inc Vat so you have saved another £20 or so which will put the price down to about £235 and then you really can argue it is just the Vat added on ;) :D
