So after looking around the forum I didn't see anyone who had already requested what I want.

>I'm after a speaker system/amplifier+speaker system
>Audio source will be from the onboard on my Crosshair IV or from the TV
>I would like 5.1 surround sound
>I'll be using them in my bedroom roughly 4x5m
>I have around £100 to spend, don't want to spend more than this and quite happy to spend less :P

The other thing (don't know if this is odd) is that I'd like the speakers to be powered by speaker cable, the type with one silver and one copper wire. This is because I'm going to be redecorating my room and will be able to install the wiring so that it is hidden. I'll also be able to wall mount the speakers. If I've got speakers that take the standard speaker wire I'll be able to replace/upgrade them without having to re-wire.

I currently have a Logitech X-540 5.1 system and am quite happy with it, the problem with it being that the wires are moulded into the back of the speakers/short rear speaker wires.

Performance wise, anything similar or above will be fine as I'm no audiophile.

Thanks for reading, any suggestions welcomed :)

Problem is, it's unlikely you will get a set of speakers that can accept normal speaker wire at this kind of budget. For £100 or less, you can't really do any better than you already have.

2nd hand is where you need to be. AV forums or especially Ebay.

I picked up a full set of Wharfdale Diamond 8 series surround speakers including sub for £35 collected.

Then all you have to do is get yourself a cheapish av receiver to go with it. I bagged myself an Onkyo 508 reciver for £85 which was a steal but you can spend less and still get good sound.

Remember, what were once award winning surround sounds amps costing £400+ at launch 5 years, all sell for under £100 nowadays. And there is nothing wrong with the sound they make.

Thanks Greebo

Your welcome. It is amazing how little quality sound stuff goes for especially av receivers and speakers as a lot are listed as collection only due to the size/weight.

You may have to wait a little while though to grab a real bargain as you obviously need an item for collection only which is near to you.

In my case it was only 40 minutes away and I got

8.3 Full height fronts
8 series centre speaker
8.1 bookshelfs to use as rear speakers
a 150 sub

That was about £400 to £500 of speakers when they were first launched only a few years ago.

Pretty sure I saw another full set sell for £80 a couple of weeks ago plus delivery. That was why they made more money.

I bought mine to replace my z-5500's and I couldn't resist a bargain. The setup was so good though, the av receiver and speakers got used on the tv in the lounge and I am still using the z-5500 on my computer. :( Hence why I keep looking as I intened to grab another full set and receiver at silly bargain prices.

Something like these perhaps but you would need a centre and a sub

or these (although slightly over budget)

These are some you missed to give you an idea:

Wow, thank you. I've never had any problems with second hand equipment so that's definitely something I would consider. Would you recommend getting separate speakers and amp/Are the amps included in the standard 5.1 system good enough?

Seperate speakers and amps are generally better but if you see a complete rig you like and it's cheap then why not?
