I sold my R56 MINI Cooper S 3 weeks ago as it just wasn't practical for my current needs. My partner and I are looking to buy a house soon so we would like a car that's affordable yet reliable. I plan on keeping the vehicle for 2-3 years. My criteria:
  • £1,000 budget but I will push up to £2,000
  • Reliable: I don't want to be spending a fortune on maintenance
  • Practical: 5 doors and enough boot space for a weekend away camping
  • Petrol (I only do 6-7k a year)
  • Manual/Auto: I'd prefer auto but I'm not sure on the reliability of the boxes within my budget
  • As many toys as possible.
I have a soft spot for Mazdas and the 6 seems to tick a lot of boxes, for example. I don't know much about them in terms of common faults and reliability. A lot of the faults reported seem to relate to the diesel models which I'm not interested in.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I had a similar budget in January and purchased a 2006 1.8 civic es. It has 138bhp, comes with panoramic roof, cruise control, climate control, auto wipers & lights etc. Engine has been one of the quietest I've ever owned. Had to replace a clutch so far for £390 including labour. Tyres are £40 each for decent hankooks and everything else is reasonably priced. I paid £1450 and couldn't recommend it enough for your criteria.

@mccarf Thanks, I do like the Honda Civic! I remember reading the clutch is a week point on them which put me off a bit. I will do some digging :).

What's the general consensus on the Peugeot 407 as an alternative to the Mazda6? It seems to have a few more common issues...p
