Yet another tagging thread (file as option? in ID3)

I am finally getting around to tagging all my mp3's - some of them work some dont

Whats really annoying me currently (trying to use ID3-TagIT) is that I thought that there was a "file as" option - ie I have 1000 or so singles which I want to file under exactly that - rather than them littering up My Ipod's artist menu - so I can hopefully just select the folder and select random rather than create a hugggggeeeeeee playlist

Also I have dozens of film soundtracks which funnily enough I want to list under OST using the same function but I cant seem to find it anywhere.

I had a feeling it was Artist / Album sort name - but this doesnt seem to want to save anything in these boxes.

Any ideas?

With ID3-Tagit you TAG the files with ARTIST and ALBUM names (and any other info) but for some reason it doesn't save that information until you click on another directory on the left side and then it asks you if you want to save it.

ohhhhhhhhhh ok - am I looking at the right option for the filing thing? to file tracks under something different to the generla artist / song title?

In the example below 3 'directories' would be made on your IPOD.
There would be a -
Fleetwood Mac with an album inside it called Rumours
Led Zeppelin with an album called Two
Steve Vai with an album called Passion And Warfare.

However, if you wanted them all to go inside the same 'directory' on your IPOD then you would give them all the same Artist and Album title when you TAG them.

Don't forget to click on another directory in ID3-Tagit to ask for confirmation to save what you've done.

*What you see on IPODs are not directories but the hidden TAGGING information*

Sorry I know the basics - however there is an option in some tagging software to keep the original artist and album name and have it appear exactly as it should but STILL be actually filed under something else.

For example some databases / tags apply "various" or "compilation" to OST's but the correct song track name and number etc (for example an original recording of Rocky Horror show is never filed in one location even though each song is correctly tagged (it seems) and all ten tracks are in different places.

I know there is a way somehow to keep all the correct info and yet file it in a different location - IE singles, or OST's, Compilations

The only way to keep all your RHPS tracks in the same place is to highlight them all, press CTRL-N (multiple TAG) and name the Artist as Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Album as OST and they will all go in the same place on your IPOD.

This is what is so daft - why? I want the original artist info on the label (not the tag necessarily) to appear on the screen of the ipod and all the tracks in the right order in one place - why is that so difficult?

so I can have a OST folder, with RHPS, Top Gun, Loce Actually all under here and then within each seperate folder the tracks and artist name in the right order - I really fail to see whats so awkward about this?

and then on the same folder level as OST I should be able to have Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Sugababes, PCD, Singles,.........you know?

1 - The IPOD doesn't work like a normal directory structure in a PC but works exclusively with the TAG information.

2 - This is what you will have to do to get all your soundtrack albums under the same 'directory'.

With ID3-Tagit highlight the directory with RHPS, highlight all the tracks, press CTRL-N and name the Artist : OST and the Album : RHPS.

Highlight the directory called Love Actually, highlight all tracks, press CTRL-N, name the Artist : OST (again) and the Album : Love Actually.

You could also fill the GENRE name in as SOUNDTRACK if you want.

Do the above for all your Soundtrack albums.

3 - Yes, just make sure you TAG them all correctly.

eg -
Highlight The River in ID3-Tagit, highlight all tracks etc etc and name the Artist : Bruce Springsteen and the Album : The River.

Highlight Born To Run, etc etc, and name the Album : Born To Run.

After transferring when you then go into your Music directory on the IPOD you will see the OST directory and now a Bruce Springsteen directory.
In the Springsteen directory you will now see two albums called The River and Born To Run.

You will get used to it :)

And what happens to the artist name on each track of the OST? Surely that will copy the artist of the album which has been renamed from what it shoud be (individual singers) to generic OST

Maybe this is impossible but what I was expecting for lets say Top Gun was to have this show up:

OST>>>Top Gun>>>01 Danger Zone - Kenny Loggins
>>>02 Mighty Wings - Cheap Trick
>>>03 Playing with the boys - Kenny Loggins etc etc

Surely if I use your system it will end up like this :

OST>>>Top Gun>>>01 Danger Zone - Top Gun
>>>02 Mighty Wings - Top Gun
>>>03 Playing with the boys - Top Gun etc etc

Most "single artist" albums seem to work , but some OST's etc dont

I appreciate your help, maybe I should just get one of those MS mp3 players which should copy Windows directly exactly

Make a new Genre called My Singles or something like that. I use Pop Various, or Pop Albums etc. Put them all in that.

Dont you think that this will still litter the MAIN menu with the singles in any other view (ie Artist or Album)

In either of these two views I would love to have just "Singles" listed - even if its just one view thats ok, rather than having to scroll through loads of one hit wonders (from what I like at least) just to get to lets say U2 at the bottom, want to try and slimline the main menu as much as possible is all

I don't follow your logic. How can it? If you select the genre "Rock Various" you won't see any Artists or Albums from the "Rock Albums". You'd need to choose "All" in Genres to see them all. Thats the whole point of using genre to separate out singles. Perhaps instead of "Rock Various" call it "Rock Singles" etc.

For example. Say if I want to see all Hendrix tracks, singles and albums. I can choose to select All in genres but that gives me a long list in Artist to scroll through. But alternatively I can select the relevent genres "Rock Albums" & "Rock Singles" & "Blue Albums" etc, which will give me a much smaller list.

That said, I don't like iTunes so don't use it as my main music app. :D

Thats just it I just seem to use the Artist main lists and wanted a theroetically simple "singles" collection under artists
