I've been having a bit of a trial into whether I can run my watercooling passive and I've spotted a bit of an issue lol!

I have my cpu in 1 pa120.3 and my nb/sb/mosfets/gfx and ram in another pa120.3 so basically most of the heat generating components are in a loop.

If I turn the fans off and just have the rear exhaust and psu fans running my cpu runs at about 40 and my gpu similar.

So I just looked at everest to see how the cpu is doing and I see "motherboard" listed as 120 degrees!!!!

Its the circled measurement, this is after about a couple of minutes of the fans on full tilt so it does react to airflow.

However the NB/SB are watercooled as are the mosfets and the NB/SB etc is not individually measured by everest for some reason, I have a P5K Deluxe if that makes a difference.

Anyway, what temp do you think its reporting? Is there any way for me to find out what sensor it is and finally I guess 120c is bad yeah? ;)

how curious.. i rebooted to look in the BIOS which said the mobo was at 33 but again no measurement of nb/sb temps.

Back into vista and it was back to 33, then it said it was in the 80s again and now it says 33 again but it was reacting to the fans being on when it was up at 80.

Maybe something has poor contact although I can't see how and I certainly ain't checking lol!

could be that the thermistor is on some other part of the board thats starved of airflow when fans are off.

try the age old poke arround and see whats hot trick.

yeah I thought that but for starters there is airflow, there's a 120mm fan on the back at full whack and a 120mm pus exhaust fan. Plus there's obviously a 360mm long rad hole on the front and on the top so its pretty well ventilated.

Plus the fans are off again and its stuck at about 37c and its not going up??

And getting in for a poke about isn't much of an option, a) I just had a small op that means I can't get down there easily and b) its got 2 waterloops in there and the mobo is covered in tubing and blocks so its very hard to get to it.

Also I'm not mad keen on feeling something thats 120c!

could be the pwm temp. what does hwmonitor say?

hwmonitor seems to think its the SYSTIN temp???

What's that?? *off to google we go!*

ok google tells me NOTHING just a bunch of forums where people are asking what SYSTIN is.. any ideas?

Also, what temps are bad for hdds?

Well when I googled it I found lots of people who have the same silly readings as yours but in ntune etc it gives a more sensible reading. Consensus seems to be everest and your mobo don;t read it right.

Also found that it's the northbridge. I doubt it was at 120 degrees as you system would have crashed.

Two ways of checking really. Find a utility which gives you an accurate reading (although could still be wrong) or secondly, switch off your fans, let the temp go to 120 degrees again and put your finger on your northbridge waterblock - apply burn cream afterwards!

the nb block couldn't have such bad contact, I've never changed it and it would have broken by now.. I'm happy to ignore it tbh.

Whilst browsing a short while back I saw either my old motherboard Asus P5B Deluxe or my current, P5K Premium and a photo with the motherboard temp sensor labelled as somewhere between the RAM sockets.

Edit: Just did a quick google image search, P5B Deluxe:

Hope that helps. :]

well if it is there I'm not suprised its hot, my ram is wastercooled so I have no need for airflow there!

Still, its gone back to 39c and stuck there with all the fans off so what the 120c was about I don't know.

Unless I guess something in the background used a load of memory for a while and heated the socket up?

Anyway, its all happy so I'm happy :)
