Ok, my ps3 has died. I turn the console on and the Yellow light comes on for a second and bleeps at me. Then the light flashed red.

Now my problem is, if I remove the hard drive to keep my current profile with the trophy information on, will that void any warranty or give sony an excuse not to fix the machine?

Thanks in advance

Thanks Robert :) So do you think it'll give Sony an excuse not to fix my machine if I send it without the hdd?

afaik as soon as you put your old hdd back in it will format it anyway and lose your data.

im not sure how u could back it up any other way either.

Well that hasn't ruined my plan :D Thanks for informing me btw.

The trophies are stored on your online profile right? So if I get a refurbished PS3 back and hook it up to the internet and sign in, I'll get the trophies I had back from when I was last online with it right? The saved games aren't so much of a problem, I just don't want to lose my platinum trophies :D

How much does Sony charge? I got my YLOD fixed by a third party for £40 and it's been going fine since. Kept all my data that way :) The guy that did it also ensured the warranty sticker remained untouched so when it goes again I can swap it for a slim under Currys extended warranty. Might be worth considering.

My friend was just charged about £120 from Sony to fix his

Outside of warranty I'm sure?

Just buy a heat gun and do it yourself. Not too hard to be honest.

Bad Idea, If he's worrying about voiding the warranty with the hard drive, I cant see him wanting to definately void the warranty and risk making matters worse with a heatgun. Considering sending it back could result in a new motherboard.

Heatgun is only an option for out of warranty consoles, or already voided warranties. Silly to use it when you can get a repair in warranty

If you put it back in the same console it will be fine but the chances are if it goes back to Sony they will send out a refurb instead of repairing the console, so it won't.

I'm not going to take risk's like a using a heat gun :)

Well it turns out guys, my warranty ran out 2 weeks ago. Typical, runs out then it breaks! They want to charge me £131. So I think 'hyperzed' has a good idea, get it done by a third party for a lot less. Get to keep all my saved data then.

Gonna back up all my data once it's up and running again, I'm not risking it again!

Thanks for your input guys.

I'd recommend phoning again, sometimes you get a nice person on the line. 2 weeks out of warranty is taking the **** if they want to charge you. I know technically its out of warranty but I'm suprised you dropped on someone looking to charge you.

I thought that the warranty was extended if it is YLOD?

My launch day 60GB PS3 got YLOD and I got a refurb one free of charge.

Trophies are synched with the PSN so you won't loose any.

If you have a friend with a PS3, put your drive in his machine and sign in, then copy all your saved data onto a USB stick.

I don't think it was ever officially extended for YLOD, but if you ask them nicely they'll probably do it free if it's not too far out of warranty.

Out of interest, how far out of warranty was your 60GB when they replaced it?
