Last minute trip booked to York for tomorrow and need to find a decent restaurant. Had a look at the usual places such as trip advisor but any first hand experience much appreciated.

Do you have any specific dietary requirements? I can recommend Goji. It's vegetarian/vegan but the food is just amazing. I would book though as it can get busy on an evening.

If you fancy a bite during the day then Xing is good choice.

No specific dietary requirements although the wife is pregnant so she is avoiding seafood and any offal etc but the majority of places are fine for her with the odd tweak here and there.

Will check out the links thanks.

J Bakers (do the seven course tasting menu!)
Masons
Mumbai Lounge
Asia Gourmet (good food, rubbish looking restaurant)
Cafe no. 8
The Go Down
Il Paradiso del Cibo (best Italian in York by a long way)

Top of my list of places to go next is the Blind Swine, they do amazing cocktails and I have head very good things about the food.

You will deffo need to book on a Saturday night.

It is seafood but they also have meat dishes as well. Blue Bicycle is a great little restaurant, used to be a brothel and if you get one of their booths its great. You'd almost forget youre in a busy restaurant, its quite personal.

they also have apartments out the back we tend to stay in, always been great.

Thanks for the other suggestions will check them all out and try and get somewhere booked this afternoon.

Il Paradiso del Cibo (worst Italian in York by a long way)

Rofl fixed that for you. This restaurant is absolutely awful. It has the worst service I've ever experienced, the staff are incredibly rude, we weren't allowed to have a starter because they said we had an hour to eat, we then weren't even offered dessert. They just brought us the bill, and that was a party of 10! Add to that the watered down soggy pasta, which was laughably called "authentic Sardinian sausage pasta" with three tiny pieces of cut up sausage in it and pasta that comes out of a bag. I'll never go back there again.

Here's one of my favourite exerpts from TripAdvisor:

"This is not a restaurant by the way its an english verison of auschwitz, i ordered a calzone and they brought me a pizza, when i told the waiter he folded the pizza in half and told me it was a dish ment to be prepered at the table!"

Absolutely epic stuff!

If you are driving and can do without drinking, I'd highly recommend Tykes at Sandburn Hall. It is a little way out of York on the A64 out toward Malton. The food is always great there.

I have only been 5 times to Il Paradiso, they were a bit funny with us when we turned up without booking one time, despite there being a free table. The food has always been really good when we have been there though. Where would you rate as an Italian in York? I would consider La Vecchia Scuola the worst one in York, some interesting things come up when you google it!

Tried to go to tykes last year but if there is a wedding on it's often not possible to eat there, check before you go out there. Food is supposed to be good though, we will make it out there one day!

To be honest there aren't really any great Italian restaurants in York, which is quite odd because there is quite a lot of demand for it. Silvano's used to be really good up until it was taken over by Caesar's, and now it doesn't exist which is a real shame. To be perfectly honest, for good Italian food we normally go to Leeds. There's a far greater choice there. San Carlo in particular is always very good.

I'm surprised you had a problem at Tykes. The wedding venue is separate to the restaurant and we've never had problems with getting a table when there's been a wedding on. Although having said that, we had booked the table beforehand so that might have helped :D

The resteraunt in the Dean Court Hotel, located next to York Minster, was really nice.

Oscars is good if you fancy a good quality burger.

Harkers is a good pub for food. Does really fantastic fish and chips.

Is Oscar's better now? After it moved and the management changed, it seemed to have gone downhill. I used to love it, although it was quite a student hangout, especially in the evenings.

One place I really miss is Old Orleans. Their food was interesting and excellent. It was a real shame that they closed down.

I've only been to it once and that was last May. No idea if its changed at all since then.

Oscar's still rates as one of the best cheese and bacon burgers I've ever had, this was 10 years ago when I was at uni in York. I would be very sad if it's changed and gone downhill now, I want to go back to York and eat one again!

Sadly they moved premises and got taken over by new management about 5 years ago, and when we went back their burgers weren't the same. Hopefully they're up to scratch again now but I haven't been back since the last bad experience.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, a lot of places were fully booked but managed to get a table at ate O clock.

Blind Swine was booked fully until July!

July?! Must be quite a place

When I was last there I never had to book anywhere. I just went in and got a table, at most having to wait about 15 - 20 minutes.

EDIT: I forgot to ask. Will you only be going for dinner? Or will you be there for lunch as well? If you are I'd recommend Cafe Rouge. It does family friendly French style cuisine. Nothing amazingly fancy, you wont get snails or frogs legs. But its tasty and theres two different ones to choose from, not all that far apart. Or theres always Bettys Tea room. Its overpriced and you'll probably have to queue for a table as its ALWAYS busy, but its worth a visit for the experience.

We are heading down tomorrow morning and coming back on Sunday, possibly with a trip to that designer outlet place if we dont find anything better to do on the Sunday.

I was hoping to catch lunch somewhere that was showing the Newcastle match at 12.45 but its going to touch and go depending on the wifes hormones whether I can pull it off haha

Edit - a friend mentioned we should head to someones Patisserie for a cake and a coffee?

There's Spring Espresso, that's meant to be really good. I haven't been but I know people who have and they say it is consistently good. The only patiserrie I know of is Patisserie Valerie on Feasegate.

Are you doing the usual touristy things like The Minster, The Dungeons and The Jorvik Viking Centre?
