York restaurant recommendations?

I see. Well I hope you have a really good time! I love York. I'm actually going there again this May so I'll probably be putting up my own thread looking for recommendations in a couple of months from now :D

Enjoy and please let us know how you got on afterwards. Pics please :)

Patisserie Valerie! Thats the one! They suggested it was a better alernate to Bettys which gets really busy.

We weren't planning on doing the touristy things, we've been a few times and did them then so was just planning on having a walk around and chill out a bit really.

Ah that's cool, I was asking because I wasn't sure what you'd get up to :) York is a lovely place and despite me living here, I don't venture into the City Centre as much as I probably should :)

Here's the website for Patisserie Valerie - http://www.patisserie-valerie.co.uk/york.aspx

Can you suggest somewhere wife friendly that will be showing the football tomorrow that will do a half decent lunch (to try and keep her happy haha)

Sadly they moved premises and got taken over by new management about 5 years ago, and when we went back their burgers weren't the same. Hopefully they're up to scratch again now but I haven't been back since the last bad experience.

you sure you didn't got to the place Oscars used to be at it called the stonegate IIRC that is ****!

But go to Oscars which now backs onto the Champagne bar Biltmore and its the same people running it. The lease ran out on the old place and a legal battle followed for the name!

July?! Must be quite a place

When I was last there I never had to book anywhere. I just went in and got a table, at most having to wait about 15 - 20 minutes.

It really isn't , it different but certainly not booked up till July quality that must be just for a Saturday night. I walk past that place fairly often on a night and hardly anyone is in there

If you fancy a decent quietish bar Oneils does Okish food which will show footie and not be packed.

Backup plan for dinner is Red chilli's finest Chinese food about and that's coming from my Wife who is Taiwanese:)

Enjoy my home city it is beautiful if expensive :)

Ate oclock wont disappoint you and report back to let us know what you think :)

I envy you guys who live in York! If I ever won it big on the Euromillions I would totally move to York, somewhere near the city centre. I just love it there. Such a nice place and friendly too. Never feel threatened walking the streets of York city centre at night.

Yeah it's a great place I really loved going there when my other half was a student there. Missing it so need to get up there again soon!

El Gaucho the Argentine steakhouse was really good but only went once.

Looks like you should buy somewhere near where I live by the river 5 minutes walk to the center. Only problem is I don't appreciate fully as I have lived here most of my life.

Very good take steak house very close to Ko San Road which is a very good thai restaurant;)

Edit I hope OP does report back to let us know how he finds York

We had a great time thanks and thoroughly enjoyed Ate O Clock, although I was pretty nervy when I walked past it earlier in the day as it looks like your bargain basement Italian from the outside if I'm being honest!

We went for a coffee and a cake at Patisseie Valerie and I wasn't hugely impressed although there was a substantially smaller cue than Bettys and it was freezing outside.

We went to a great pub down on the waterfront just down the steps by the Slug and Lettuce that had a chart on the wall of where it gets flooded to! I bet they have difficulty getting insurance for that place!

Went to McArthur Glen Designer Outlet on the Sunday and it was greatly imporved from when I was there a few years back! Its on the agenda for the summer once the baby is here and the missus doesnt have a bump as she couldnt spend "much" apparently....

Thanks again for all the advice and recommendations

Glad you had a good time. Did you take any pictures? What did you have for eating? :)

I think the pub you went to is called the Kings Arms or something like that? The last time I was in York there was a night of heavy rain and the river flooded. That pub and the street next to it were swamped. Just as well I went on the river tour ride the day before or I'd have missed out, as the boats couldn't run, seeing as both landings for them were under water :p

Yep that's the King's Arms. They're shut for months most year's, but with it having the reputation that it has, it is always full when it is open :)

Glad you liked Ate 'O Clock. I know the outside doesn't look the best, but the food is really good there. What did you have to eat?
