Gentlemen,

A few friends and I are stuck in South Shields for the next 2 & 1/2 weeks doing a trio of short courses, and as these are only 3/4 days in length at most, we find ourselves with a few days to spare. Thus, having lived in the Shields/Newcastle area for almost the past 3 years, we've sort of exhausted the sights the area has to offer.

As a result, we're looking to travel a bit further afield, and have settled on getting the train down to York on Friday morning, doing abit of tourism before having a few pints and a meal. then getting the train back to Newcastle in the evening.

It's been about 10 years since I was last in York, so I'm hoping to see the Jorvik Center, the city center and the Minster before heading to the city's famed real ale pubs. Therefore, I was hoping I could get some recommendations from our esteemed members for any pubs in the city that stand out that we should visit?

Thanks. :)

I suggest you check the prices of where you want to go and fill up your wallet accordingly. As nice as York is, it's shockingly expensive.

Make sure you visit the shambles, and help the poor kids with their survays!
And when you go to the minster, do the tower (if your reasonably fit and, its a lot of steps; and not tooo overweight as they get rather narrow) and the crypts.

Not overly , no more so than most cities IMO.

It's a great place to visit:)

OP I would do a search there must be literally 10's of threads on York

Let's use a family of four as an example - two adults and two children.

York minster combined ticket: £40. You can only buy a family pass for the minster, for £20.

York dungeons: At the door £49, online £30.

Jorvik: £27.

That's £97 on three places.

As others have said really, But for the life of me I can't decide why you ain't going north to Edinburgh ;)

Theres loads to do! :D

If you like museams I'd recommend the Castle Museam next to Cliffords Tower. The railway museam is awesome. Yorks Sweet Story is a cool exhibit on Yorks history in chocolate making. The Jorvik Viking centre is really good. The York Minster is fairly interesting. Theres also the Yorkshire Museam. Or the river tour boat that runs throughout the day. Not worth doing that if the weather is poor though. There is a city art gallery, but its closed right now sadly. Or theres the sightseeing bus that runs round the city, but again thats one to only do in good weather, especially if your upstairs in the open top part.

The Kings Arms pub on the riverside is pretty decent, though they only do Samuel Smiths stuff. Bora Bora or Evil Eye are two really good cocktail bars.

must be at the marine college!

the railway museum is free these days so a must visit really.

as people have said edinburgh is about the same travel time north on the train as well worth a visit

Edinburgh can be just as expensive as York these days. But there is loads to see n do. Another vote for the railway museum but be warned, the have a display of all 6 surviving LNER A4s so it is insanely busy in the main hall at the mo.
maltings pub near the station is excellent for real ale (and very real cider!)
Tis a very nice, compact city to wander around in.
