You are asked to help fix a mates PC. What freeware would you take?

Wow great responses from the OcUK crew :)

Thanks loads for all your suggestions. Im gonna have a lot of bookmarking to do in Opera now hee hee. These boot CDs (and that Avira one) sound like really handy things to have!

Hirins boot cd. Doesn't appear to have a manual, which just adds to the fun.
Vista cd / xp pro / xp home / office 2003 / office 2007

The other useful thing is magicaljellybean, since this tells me their office/windows/other keys. Generally back up and reinstall is quicker, and knowing the keys helps with this

Considering slipstreaming driver packs into the windows disks, but not got around to testing this yet.

edit: adblock and noscript on firefox works wonders, though you generally have to allow flash

I built a pc for a friend but they keep textin me to go fix it, they say "it keeps getting viruses, its new it shouldnt be playing up like this". Im getting annoyed.

Last time i went round, all they had was an internet explorer pop up window of your "my computer" page and it said VIRUS VIRUS VIRUS everywhere on it. All i did was alt ctrl dele and closed it, as it didnt seem to wanna close via the X.

I ran spybot S&D and it found 78 problems  I removed, updated and imunized the system and went.

Just got a text saying the pc is playing up again, another virus, can i go round and fix it.

This is annoying, is there anything i can put on their system to stop pop ups like this? They are using Firefox which i thought was supposed to be better than IE with this type of thing!

I dont know how people do it, i built my own pc years ago and ive never had any pop ups like this, or viruses, and i go on a heck of a lot of different sites. All my friend goes on is facebook lol

Go round there and bookmark some free safe porn sites.

All your problems should go away :p
