"You can't get better than a Kwik-Fit fitter"

took my rx7 to one of these places once. I made it very clear that it should be warm before turning it off. I even stuck a sticky note over the rev counter pointing at the temp gauge saying they shouldn't turn it off untill the needle reaches a certain point.

got a call the next day "er we can't start your car, i think the engines gone" So i came round and deflooded it. When i looked at the car, no sticky note and the mechanic had no idea that it had to be warmed up. He still insisted that i needed a new engine, at which point i explained to him if it needed a new engine it would because he left it flooded over night. The current engine had only 20k on it, luckily still going strong though.

urgh, some people
Why on earth would you leave your car with them overnight? or at all for that matter

they are 'fitters' not mechanics.

I have used KwikFit once and it was once enough.

Called in there soon after getting the 530i as I wanted 4 Eagle F1's. They quoted £800, I laughed, they then agreed to pricematch Mytyres. Excellent, they can do it.

Fitted the tyres, great.

Noticed an odd vibration through the wheels. The E39 is pretty common for this when the suspension components begin to wear. But I'm sure it co-incided with new tyres. So I took it back and asked them to re-balance. They did, but said it was already balanced. Hmmm.

It didnt fix the problem. Great. Obviously worn control arms.

I put up with it for a while but then just before ordering up £400+ of suspension components I took it somewhere else and had the wheels balanced again.

The car has had no vibration since.

You can't get thicker than a Kwik Fit fitter.

Their mechanics are paid much less then those at your main dealer. This is because they are not as good, not by a long way.

The work is usually cheaper at a main dealer, especially when it comes to the damage Kwik-Fit will do.

/thread.

They tried to tell me i needed 2 new front tyres and that they were 'dangerous and illegal' when i dropped a mate off to collect something from his mate who worked there. Nevermind the tyres were dealer fitted brand new and i had the car literally 3 weeks, guess i drove like a right loon in that time! :D

I knew a few guys who worked at Kwik Fit. They spent most of the time doing mechanic jobs on the side using the premises and selling nicked car stereos.

One of the aforementioned beautiful people decided my girlfriend at the time would be better off with him and duly tried it on when I was down the shops.

After a terrible scuffle down the local pub where I communicated my displeasure with his conduct, I still felt I was left short. But before I saw him again, a spring compressor blew up in his face and pretty much took the bottom half of it off. Couldn't have happened to a nicer person.

They did however fix two exhaust leaks free of charge so I can't complain.

Everyone knows what a bunch of ****** they are so you nearly deserve what you get in there.

they're not mechanics

they're fitters

"they even say so in the slogan. You cant get better than a kwik fit fitter"

I do, I know a lot of people that do too.
Brakes, and batteries are possibly the easiest things on a car to do, exhausts aren't exaclty a difficult job either.

Ever had an exhaust stud snap off? I wouldn't describe fitting exhausts as straight forward.

Just getting at them for a start, you would struggle doing that outside your house, I know because I have done it.

thing is though

they are fitters - ie they just fit parts. You come in and ask for an exhaust to be fitted. They take one off, then put another back on.

Theirs no diagnostic or fault finding work required. yes taking the stuff on and off isnt always straight forward, but they do it often enough to find ways to make it easier for themselves. Its not as complex a job as being a proper mechanic.

Semantics, but with what I've seen, they don't even meet the standard I would expect for a "fitter".

not by the traditional definition, as i explained above.

Go and ask your local indy garage if he would class himself as a "fitter" when he bites your head off, ask him why not ;)

They price matched mytyres for front tyres on my girlfriends car but they managed to badly mark both alloys fitting them. They offered to get them sorted without much of a fight which the mobile repair company did a cracking job on. Shame my girlfriend then went on to kerb all four alloys within a couple of months.

Only thing I trust them with is fitting tyres, last time I got a car serviced there I ended up having to buy two new front shocks as they were leaking, whether there was anything wrong with them before I took the car in....who knows

Had them gun my locking wheel nuts on so tight the force needed to get them off mangled the nut (these were the type where the socket attachment had 3 pins that fit into the head of the nut)

Also had them swap a tyre and rebalancing it without removing the original weights from the alloy after they had been told that it needed fine balancing

Only reason ive used them is because i got a company discount for a place i used to work and they still credit me with the discount so i actually get a resonable price on my tyres

I've replaced an entire exhaust, it's not a total pig of a job, well it is a little bit of a pig at times, but i reckon every average john can do it with enough lager and a set of tools.
