You coconut!

I've actually heard this been said a few times as a replacement for the See You Next Tuesday remark.

Hairy, wet, starts with a C, ends in T and has a U and an N in the middle.

Go figure.

It does make sense. I know this because I've heard people say it to other asians. This is because whoever it's been said to, had acted rather 'white' and not 'brown'.

No, it doesnt make sense because we are not white inside anyway.

Its people wanting to find a reason to make it racist.

Ok. You might not be white from inside anyway. But you could act like a white person. It's like a white man acting like a black person. People end up saying 'Wigga.'

It's similar but obviously your using a large hard-shelled oval nut with a fibrous husk containing thick white meat surrounding a central cavity filled (when fresh) with fluid or milk to describe the person.

Sorry, but you are nuts to even think that imo.
I guess calling someone bananas would be wrong as well, even though bananas has been used as a terms for nuts / crazy for years!

coconut - hard shelled empty brainless inside. Kinda like what the woman was trying to say...

Mcfly, anybody home mcfly... etc

That makes no sense and isn't what it means.

Maybe by your definition but in the asian community and in my experience people in general seem to regard "coconut" in this context as exactly what Vita says, a brown person who acts "too white" and/or has forgotten their roots.
I'm often referred to as one as I'm an asian who drinks, goes to uni without having exclusively asian friends, dates white girls, listens to indie music rather than hip-hop/r'n'b (ironic as that's not exactly my roots but it's what I'm "meant" to be listening to) and generally speaks and behaves like someone born and raised in West London.
The term is interchangable with "bounty" and "oreo" is the term for black people. It's not political correctness gone mad, people aren't just making it up to cause a fuss, the councillor in question knew exactly what she meant when she said it and I could see how it could cause offence.

Maybe you're aware of something that isn't in that story but from the quote provided I can't tell whether she is saying that the man was stupid or whether there was something else behind the comment.

Also, to comment on the story itself, I'm surprised more people aren't outraged that a councillor is being attacked for having the audacity to be asian and not just blindly support any project that benefits ethnic minorities...

Sorry Morba, but just because you haven't heard the term used in a racist context doesn't make everyone else wrong.
I have heard it used between people of afro-carribean background as a racial slur, and other know the term in this context too. It's not looking for racism where it's not there, but an observation based on experience.
That said, it's ridiculous that it's been raised to this level particularly when no complaint has actually been made.

My wife has grown up in the UK and is of Chinese origin. She has been called a banana before which in a way is derogitory. This is no different...... depending on context of course.

I think it's quite obvious what the counciler meant by the term coconut from the wording she used. In fact thats quite a blatant use of a racist term and I'm suprised she has got away with just apologising. Maybe it just isn't as harsh an insult if you are accusing someone of being a whitey. Although having said that a white person using the term would maybe have been forced to resign by now.
