Hi all, I am in the middle of buying components for my new build PC. Im not a big gamer but maybe would like to able to if I wanted, possible future use is video-editing but basically wanted a new highish spec new machine to treat myself.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (2.8GHz) Socket AM2 2MB L2 Cache (2x1MB)

Samsung SH-S182 SATA 18x DVD±RW/RAM Black


All I really need now is a Graphics Card, can anyone give me some sound advice on whats to get for around £30-£50 having read what I will be using it for. I have looked at the following but to be honest its a bit of a grey area to me and if theres others to consider please let me know.


Sapphire X1650 Pro 512MB 128bit DDR2 Dual DVI TVO PCI-E and also numerous 7600 cards.

Look forward to youre advice guys and any comments on items bought so far

Don't really know about the videocard but for a video editing machine I guess you can better go with a Core2Duo CPU as Intel CPU's usually have better encoding performance and maybe get a 500GB+ harddisk as (uncompressed) videofiles are huge.
 
Ive already bough components listed so an Intel CPU is not an option now but point taken regarding video editing.Will probably get another h/drive when finances allow.

As for saving extra money for the graphics cards JD I could but dont really want to as Im keen to get this up and running but advice noted for future.

Gunthers link is the one for you then ;). I just know for a few quid extra that the X1950Pro destroys that X1650. That's why I mentioned it even though it was over your budget.

You won't be disappointed when you fire up a game over that X1650. Hope you enjoy ;).

For your purposes this will be good, but as said allready for a little more the X1950pro is much better.


As for sound, many people use onbaord sound with no issues, so i would say see how you go & if you are not happy then get a seperate sound card. If you have 5.1 speakers or play lots of tunes on your pc then a dedicated sound card is also a good idea.

His system is fine. Yes overclocked the Conroe is faster, cooler with less power draw but in no way is AMD obsolete LMAO. Try and remember the time before Conroe was out. The Athlon 64's are faster, cooler with less power draw than the Pentium 4 range and even today they can still be bought.

Yes, only two but AMD had the lead over Intel for so long and the Pentium 4 was never a bad buy. It just wasn't as good as the Athlon 64's. Just like the Athlon 64 isn't as good as the Conroe today. They still aren't a slouch though.

AMD at 2.8Ghz is just a few points away from a stock E6600 (2.4Ghz). Although currently you can leave any AMD cpu behind with an overclock.

cheers guys, great debate and to be honest never considered an Intel if Im perfectly honest maybe im just an AMD man at heart anyway I have bit the bullet and gone for X1950 FOR THE EXTRA COST(AND OVERTIME).

There are one or two minor concerns I have 1.Will my power supply be sufficent and 2. Will the stock cooler/heatsink be sufficent or should I go for something a bit more beefier if so please recommend the best one available, Zalman?

Any advice appreciated to keep this system as cool as possible

PSU will be fine as you will not have a top range videocard.

As for a cooler, I would not go with a stock one, they are usually noisy and bad, getting a different one is highly advised as it can run quieter and cool better.

But the top models can cost you an additional 40 quid or even more.
