Surprising study in the fact happiness in this group is up, the figures are quite astonishing compared with pre-recession and for the near future looks like it will only increase.

As this forum is pretty focused around gaming I'd be interested to hear peoples thoughts on why this is becoming increasingly common, I know there's the obvious conclusion like employment for people without a college degree is likely going to be extremely unrewarding but surely happiness is going to fade for these men when they reach their 30's and 40's, particualrly when they can't just have their parents doing everything for them still and have to start fending for themselves with no experience and some pretty difficult explaining to do with employers who ask about why they've been unemployed so long.

Doesn't surprise me, I imagine all the victim blaming misogynistic comments that I often see on the internet/social media are from these types of men.

Question is - How are they affording all these consoles, games etc? Bank of mum and dad?

It's a power/control/ownership thing. Not suprising considering how competitive it can be out in the working world. I've done/do the same thing.

I'd love to sack off all responsibility and spend all of my time playing video game, is my genuine and sincerely held belief, and one that I would very much regret acting on after six weeks of wasting my potential in my man cave. I've been unemployed (not through choice) it gets old very quickly and assuming that these people are being supported by family what is the end game? Do you really want to be that guy joining an apprenticeship programme at 40 and trying to keep up with the new grads? If you want to bum around then do it mid career, that way the hard work has been done and you'll have an easier time finding work after.

That said I find it hard to judge them, life's tough for young people in this economy, nobody really wants to give them a break and if you do manage to get your foot on the ladder you're likely working a job you don't really care about just to make ends meet. I'm happier in work, maybe they think they've found a better way.

Its not just video games. Its Netflix and the like. Kids/young adults don't need to earn lots of money to stay at home watching endless series of crap on Netflix and playing cheap computer games.

Then you have all the psychological problems that come with staying in a room without any real face to face interaction with people. Anxiety seems to be on the increase.
Young adults say that 'Oh I dont want to go outside and have a 'real' life. Its full of bad relationships, fights with mates, backstabbing friends etc'.. but these are all things that make people better and stronger.

nothing that's not blatantly obvious

and then they all complain how they can't get on housing ladder etc etc

Holy sweeping generalisation barman!

Yes it is

But - These types of men don't mix with any real women, they watch lots of porn which warps their sense of what's normal, and then they think they are hard done by because they can't get a girlfriend and get involved with ****-shaming and the like

Jesus Christ, kid just wanted to stay home playing WoW instead of working in Maccy D's, that escalated quickly!

More likely coloured by me reading this story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-41764308

Adam Blampied who has been accused/issued the apology has had to defend the women he did it too, because they were getting attacked/abused by other internet users!

"Please don't attack the women for speaking out.

"They have been hurt, by me.

"Please don't publicly leap to my defence on this. My behaviour doesn't warrant it.

"The purpose of this was not to excuse myself, but because it's what the women deserve, for the wider public to see my behaviour.

"Please be kind and understanding to the women. More than I was."

Also seen recently here in the Harvey Weinstein thread.

Consoles are pretty cheap, pretty much any single person including those on benefits can afford a console. I mean if you can afford to smoke or drink alcohol you can afford a console just by cutting down a little bit...

we would all prefer to stay at home doing fun stuff but a lot of them need to get themselves into the real world, these are the ones that then just bitch how unfair things are these days when if they got their backsides in gear maybe they would find that life worked out better long term

lol I think that was my sons plan when he left sixth form, a leaflet for a new McD's drive through came through the letterbox (makes a change from poop) and I told him to get off his arse and go and get a job.
He's a manager there now :p
I think some kids just don't know what to do with their lives when they leave school/college/whatever and need a bit of a push.

Hey I'm not arguing with that point, I just think the progression from lazy guy who just doesn't want to get a job to porn obsessed misogynist is probably less than inevitable. I was a basement dwelling gamer in my youth but I grew up and now I can't even remember the last time I kidnapped a hooker.

I think almost all of them do to be honest, regardless of the point at which you finish education for a lot of people there's this "what now" feeling when you realise that you know a lot of stuff but haven't really started adapting to the needs of the real world. Sometimes, as you say, people just need to be told what to do next, once they've taken the first step the rest is easier.

Incidentally I always regretted not working at my local Maccy D's as a first job. I knew a few guys who did and it seemed to be a non stop conveyer belt of free food and promiscuity, and excellent way to break oneself in to the world of work.

I think these people have neither suffered the reality check required or benefited from how work can expand your life. Staying in and playing games all day may be good, but it will get boring and life will feel dull and hollow.

Working, even for a job that is not necessarily fulfilling by itself, is fulfilling in other ways. Just having social interaction with colleagues is a huge plus, even if they are nothing like you (sometimes especially so), the freedom you get from earning a bit of dosh or a sense of some control if you need the dosh to pay for living. Working even a bad job has its benefits and helps to shape teenagers into more rounded adults.

Now you got through school and college, being told that you need to be ambitious, do what you want to do and that anything is possible but most teenagers don't know what to do and so it hard to generate ambition and motivation. Those who get a taste of work life know the rewards it can bring and that is enough for them to get them into work in the morning.

.

yes, problem is that as soon as they get a gap between school and work then it's a downward spiral
