Your 2015 computer disasters

My coolermaster eisberg decided to leak all over my ram in january which resulted in lots of BSODs till my PC would just turn on and off, This made me investigate and notice my ram had liquid on the connectors.

Looked at the cooler which was leaking from one of the corners which after taking it apart looked like the thin rubber gasket had failed.

Fearing the worst i let it all dry out for 2 days and put it all back together with an air cooler and it has worked fine ever since at 4.8ghz :D

i was relieved to say the least.

I struggled plugging my xbox controller in the other night as it was dark:D that's the nearest I come to a disaster :(

My laptop slid out of its Targus bag the other day, fell a couple of feet (sofa height) and landed on its keyboard/mouse dongle which bent the corresponding USB port. Luckily no cracked screen, but value of laptop is now probably halved due to 1 less USB port than before.

This is pretty much what I did to mine last year too. On mine the USB dongle was in a port that had one right next to it so it took out both of them. I went from three USB ports to one :p

About the OP, I had a weird issue with my PC where it shut down in the middle of a game and wouldn't turn back on no matter what I did. I was panicking thinking I'd killed the board or the CPU so I was thinking about either buying a second hand Z77 or just rebuilding it with haswell. Luckily, I left it over night and it turned on right away the next morning.

Thought of selling my PS3 slim, the PS3 works but the controller has some sticky buttons thanks to a spilling of soft drink ages ago so that kind of ruins the selling of it, last time I took a playstation controller apart it wouldn't go back together

this january decided to update some software on my motherboard
The damn thing is second hand and faulty

Days of regret followed as it will not work more bluescreens then i have seen in the last 2 years

And by mistake i left system restore on when i had to reinstall the OS because of software failure in october
After using it it is working better then ever
I do not get 5 warnings at boot i get only one

My disaster of 2015 is building my computer.. I haven't seen daylight or had any fresh air in weeks! My bank balance hates me too now.

Not really a disaster but hey!

Not quite 2015 but this happended to me just before the start of the year when I was rebuilding my PC and installing the watercooling system:

(one of the tubes came loose while the system was still running the pump spat fluid over everything)

I had to repaint my wall as well.

Earlier this year I decided I wanted to try and dual boot Windows and Linux. Unfortunately for me I made the rookie error of not unplugging one of the hard drives..

I have identical model SSDs, and I wiped the wrong one without any backups!

Fixed my step brothers computer (Unable to boot)
Then later in the day mine died royally. A nuke later, and a re-encryption and i'm running, without my game of course... :(
Don't have the time to set it up again lol. :o

I recently couldn't get my GPU out of my X79 motherboard so I pulled harder, forgetting there is a tab to depress. It ripped the PCIE connector out of the board. Luckily it has several other full speed connectors to use instead.

I actually laughed out loud when I read that (Sorry mate), you must have put quite some force on to rip the connector off. Not really had much go wrong so far this year *Touch Wood* had an SSD die, but it was one of 2 stripped 40GB SSDs that I had BF4 installed on, but haven't played it for a while so I don't even know when the drive failed.

End of last year the first SSD I bought died, it was an OCZ vertex Turbo 120GB that cost me £349 when I bought it, I was gutted!

This is what scares me about making a custom watercooling loop. Furthest I gone so far was an H80.

Nothing to major this year, apart from needing to wait for a CPU Cooler for the new build.

bunch of stuff in the past tho worth talking about.

1 - BFG 8800 OC 512mb, artifacts in bios and no 3D support, so i cooked it in the oven at 200c for 20mins and brought it back to life, i still own this card, though for saftey i gave it to my mum and i got a EVGA 570HD 2.5gb about 3 years or more ago.

2 - Logitech G5 Gaming mouse the cable kept loosing connection, so i opened it up and tried to re-route it out the right side, this felt really strange so kept at it and managed to fix the cable but was left with a hole. Used black Sugru to fix the hole, it looks almost good as new now, you wouldnt be able to tell. I use this as my Laptop and Work mouse now. i have the G500 at home.

3 - On my old Thermaltake armor after up all night gaming took headphones off to go to the toilet and tripped over them, ripping out a top USB port. still broken could never buy a replacement on Thermaltake store.

4 - old set of earphones speakers started to go on them so managed to re-solder the cables to repair but only lasted a few months after needing an upgrade.

5 - 1.5TB Harddrive died on me with all my Uni work and personal stuff on it. the annoying thing was i was using it as a backup device, once everything was on it. not long after it dyed, i still own it, but its going to cost over £250 to try and recover the data professionally. I now own a 2TB NAS BOX so this never happens again.

that's all i can think of at the moment.

Oh on the Headphones front I broke my Plantronic Gamecom Headset couple of weeks ago unplugged the 3.5mm jack from the speakers and tried to pull the cable and didnt realise it was caught on something and snapped the cup off. Tried glueing it together and left it for a couple of days to set, then tried to put them on and i heard them creaking like they were going to snap again, so they been put to one side!
