Your best CPU's over the years?

K6-2 3dnow.

Partly because I worked my butt off in a low paid job as a dish washer...and spend it all on that chip along.with mono and ram.

Loved it..except for the whine..

Took me months to earn it. Now I could buy one everyday.

Easily the Q6600, I bought that CPU in 2008 to use in my gaming PC and it served me well up until last year. Now it's happily sitting in my htpc and still performs nicely at 3ghz overclocked.

I also used the E8200 in a different build and it did well being overclocked to 3.5ghz, performed excellently for years and was a solid investment. An honorable mention goes to my P4 ht, although the P4s did get some stick, the hyperthreaded version was another solid performer for me.

I must say my current Q8300 has lasted far better than I ever expected it to, it handles BF4 just fine and even GTA V (albeit only just!) for what was a budget upgrade four + years back, to find it handling GTA V was especially impressive, I thought I'd be getting a stutter fest of an experience, it's been anything but! I've spent hours on it, but do notice (via MSI Afterburner) all four cores are sitting @100% for much of the time.
It needs replacing soon and I'm going down the cheap route of an old i7 tbh, but, for an unloved chip, the Quad has served me honourably.

As already mentioned though, the 6502 in my old BBC Model B was a fantastic CPU that performed minor miracles with the games and applications for that machine back in its day.

Q6600 @ 3.2 overclock
2500k @ 4.2 overclock

My last 2 pc's with these have lasted a very long time, with a huge number of graphics cards in-between. My old Q6600 is still being used by a friend I gave my old gaming PC to!

I'll be looking to upgrade again perhaps for the next generation, but those two have served by better than most & as it stands today, the 2500k isn't worth ditching yet.

I first got into DIY PC building in 2009, and began with an E5200. What a great clocker - 2.5 GHz stock to 3.8 GHz stable. It had me hooked. The list below is in chronological order purchased, but were not always powering my main PC.

For the record... from my experience, the A6-5400K was pants even when overclocked! It did not stay long.

The 3570K @ 4.2 GHz is the current chip in my main machine, and I see no reason to change it for a little while yet :)

Intel Core i3 560
