Your current Fish tank Setups!

Got myself a Fluval Edge 23l last Saturday as it was on offer at £70 at P@H. In the week I added an Amazon Sword and Small Fern plant.

I went back last night and purchased 8 Cardinal Tetra and a couple of Amano Shrimp. Unfortunately an hour later one of the Shrimp was feasting on a dead Tetra. I can only assume this was stress related as my water was fine by way of the litmus test I had carried out.

I went back to the shop this morning with some test water and they replaced it free of charge after also testing my water and saying it was fine.

One thing I have noted is that one of the remaing Tetras has part of it's tail missing. What is the cause for this and is this another impending casulty?

Pic excl fish. I have since moved the rock to the left of the tank. I moved the rock as the Tetra's were hidden by the rock, that may be a bit big for the tank.

Edit: Now with fish!

You put fish in a week old tank, your tank isn't cycled yet, cardinals need mature water for a start.

So, the tank has been operating for one week? If so, that's not long enough for it to become ready for any inhabitants.

From what you've said, I assume you don't have a water test kit. Buy one that tests for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, GH and KH.

Cardinal tetras require a mature tank. A week for these critters is no way near long enough.

Ha, litmus test? That a PH test? If so that's the least of your worries pal. Want to be focusing on ammonia and nitrite.

Ammonia was zero the same as nitrite. Nitrate is circa 30, but that's what it's like straight out of the tap. P@H was 40.

Sorry, I know it sounds like we're being ***** but unless you've done a fishless cycle on your tank expect every single one of those fish to drop dead.

It's zero because the cycle has yet to begin.

Yup the guys are right.

The ammonia is 0 because it is just fresh tap water.

You need to cycle it for a few weeks before adding fish. To get ammonia to build up you need to add pinches of fish food so the bacteria cycle can get started.

The tetra's WILL die. Reason why i know this... I did the exact same thing when i first started.

Many regard PH as not overly important, but these latest pics prove otherwise. When I first got my lemon tetras, they were almost a silvery transparent colour to them. As the name suggests, well kept specimens should have a distinct beautiful lemony sheen to them. My PH at the start was 7.8 and although the fish were healthy, the colours didn't improve. Over a few weeks, I gradually mixed in more and more RO water until I got a TDS of just 100, a GH of 2-3 and a PH of 6.2. Perfect Amazonian conditions. These photos shows how much of an improvement the water chemistry has made to their colouration. You can also see how the Cardinals are thriving as well.

Nice photos, but they do not prove pH is important. ;)

The pH scale simply tells you of the ratio of H an OH ions, not how many of each are present.

Water hardness (TDS and gH) are far more important, they tell you how much is dissolved in the water.

You added pure RO (~ gH 0) from the sound of things to your tank (tap) water, lowering the gH to 2-3, but you don't state what gH your initial tank water had.

You either need to rehome the fish asap or get some mature filter media from a friend, failing that you could try something like Tetra Safestart or you will loose all of the tetras in the very near future.
