Hi All,

Relatively straight forward thread today. I was wondering if anyone else has a list of all those packages you install every time you install a new Linux OS. I'll start with a couple of mine, to help the those newer to Linux I'll try and an a little explanation of what each does

openssh-server (allows SSH and SFTP access into your box)
eclipse (Java IDE)
libdvdcss (library to decrypt DVD movies :0)
vlc-player (the best media player!)
virtualbox (virtualization)
wine (lets you run some windows apps on linux)
aMule (edonkey client for Llinux)
wireshark (traffic analyzer)
k9copy (DVD "backup" program)
R (statistics package)
textlive (tex authoring package)

vlc player + textlive + R are fantanstic. textlive is the one and only professional typeset tool. Perfect for mathematics, etc, but I also used it for my wedding invitations.

In addition to the excellent list above:

auctex - short cuts to make entering TeX or LaTex easier. (with this package my LaTex entry is just as fast as standard typing and that includes the mathematics.)
ssh - meta package under debian for client and server secure connections
ntp - network time protocol (keeps your computer clock in sync)
emacs - great editors with knowledge of TeX extensions
kde - windows manager
digiKam - digital photo management
transmisson - bittorrent client
kontact (under kde) - personal information manager (store all your email/meetings/etc)
iceweasel - debian version of firefox
ekiga - software phone (with video)
gcc - compilers

amarok (music player. Has to be 1.4 - 2.x is complete **** at the moment... I hope it gets better!)
smplayer (great front end for the best movie player around)

In addition to some of the stuff already mentioned, scummvm to play my copies of Day of the Tentacle & Broken Swords 1 & 2 etc is pretty high on the essential list for me (oh, and some development tools for fun, window manager etc ... :)).
