Your favourite (non Ubuntu) distro?

I think ubuntu is great, opensuse is good too.

I'm currently try Arch and am gonna install it over the bank holiday when I have more time.

Arch is quick but needs a lot of manual Dos style setup. I would start with ubuntu/opensuse then branch out when you know the basics of the linux OS.

Gentoo, then Arch.

Gentoo if you have a fast enough box. Otherwise Arch.

n.b. Gentoo is only good for beginners if you have **** loads of patience and don't mind RTFMing. Also, install it from a Knoppix live cd for extra kudos ;)

EDIT: or install from Arch cd, or Red Hat, etc..

I had a brief love affair with arch which has somewhat come to an end, I think it's great for a high performance command line box optimized to one thing well. For more general server and workstation use I'll be sticking with Centos (or RHEL for important boxes).
