Gentoo if you have a fast enough box. Otherwise Arch.
n.b. Gentoo is only good for beginners if you have **** loads of patience and don't mind RTFMing. Also, install it from a Knoppix live cd for extra kudos
I had a brief love affair with arch which has somewhat come to an end, I think it's great for a high performance command line box optimized to one thing well. For more general server and workstation use I'll be sticking with Centos (or RHEL for important boxes).
