Hi,
I'm looking to build a v.fast PC. However
I'm not really interested in overclocking
the computer or gaming. I would like to
initially add two monitors with the scope
of adding more in the future (maybe upto 8-12).

I came up with the spec below. Obviously I'd
like to spend less money if possible but want
to keep the faster proc. I'd really appreciate
any comments or changes to the spec to make it
better and cheaper :D

Intel Core i7 975 3.33Ghz - £770
EVGA Classified Intel X58 - £345
Corsair 12GB (6X2GB) - £350
1600MHz 8-8-8-24 Dominator
with DHX+
Main Grafx card - Sapphire ATI - £130
Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5
Vapor X
PCI-Express Graphics Card
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 Dual Fan - £62
Quiet CPU Cooler
Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred Case - £124
Coolermaster Silent Pro Modular - £167
1000W Power Supply

Total 1948

Thanks for any feedback,

Regards,
Imran

ud be better off getting the i7 920 and overclocking tbh. then you could spend the money on eyefinity so you can use all those screens

Thanks for your feedback. I should have mentioned this in my opening post but to explain briefly, I need a fast PC for number crunching and financial data analysis.

Currently for the number crunching bit, I am doing simulations on a 3.2 GHz pentium which take several days to finish using only 3-6 months of market data. I would like to extend this analysis to cover 2-3 years PLUS if possible. Hence my need for a fast processor.

For the financial data analysis, I want to be able to view multiple financial charts on more than one screen at a time. I am not familiar with eyefinity. Would it be suitable for this purpose? I am not looking to extend the desktop over several monitors.

Thanks.

One question - can I number crunch as normal on an overclocked system such as the one quoted above by BizKid? I'm worried that running solid over a few days may over-heat and damage the system.

Well if you have a good cooler on there which you do then you wont have that problem as OCUK test all the overclocked systems before you recieve and so you wont have any instability e.t.c
I would suggest giving OCUK a ring asap to confirm this but i am fairly certain i am correct

Hi Imran,

I would build,

You still have 400 pounds spare. :)

If a system is overclocked right it is EXACTLY as stable and reliable as a system running at stock settings. There is nothing magic about an stock system which makes it rock solid where and overclocked system won't be. A lot of the time the chips are all the same out of the factory just with different numbers printed on them and different multipliers set.

Every system I've owned for the last 16 years as been overclocked with many of them running 24/7. No stability problems at all.

dont get a 5970 as it is a complete waste a 5850 or 5870 is more than enough.... The rest looks good though although i would suggest the Coolermaster ATCS 840 instead of the 800d because it seems your pc will be for business use and the ATCS looks a lot more professional

Does he really need a HD 5970, considering he is not going to use it for gaming, but for number crunching? If he do need a newer card the 5850 would make more sense to me, plus he would have more change over for another card, since he want to have mulitple monitors, not sure how many monitors the eyefinity supports though. If it only support up to three monitors per card, maybe got for 4 5770's instead and a mobo that can support 4 PCI-E cards? I am not expert though, just sounds more in line as to what the OP is asking for...

Thanks Stefan - looks good. I'll talk to the OC guys on Monday. I already have the Antec case on my current PC - its way cool!

Swede, I only need a decent card that supports multiple monitors. hellarda mentioned eyefinity which is supported by the cards you mentioned. I'll look into it and ask the OC guys.
Thanks.

BizKid - The computer is for home use for some personal work I am doing. I much prefer the Antec actually having already tried/tested it out :)
Cheers for the help man.
