Your first connection and memories of the internet.

28.8, huge white box, loads of blinking red LEDs, that SQUEEEEEEKKKKKKKKEEEEBBRRRREEEEEKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEE noise, good times, good times...

Had been LAN gaming for years before we got the internet, but my first memories of the internet were:

Trout-slapping people in mIRC
Waiting for pixelated hentai pics to download
Spending hours downloading a single 128kbps mp3 from Audiogalaxy
Getting disconnected from any of the above every time my parents picked up the phone

I remember getting in to the top 50 in the world on red alert :), my mate was no1 for a time on total annihilation. Wehn we went round to his house he had about 20 empty cans of stella and energy drinks, had been up for 2 days straight and had a fag handing out his mouth whilst his hands worked his magic over the keyboard and mouse lmao

Difference back then was that everyone was roughly on the same speed as each other, these days there is a massive gap. I only have a 4mb connection and yet my friend has 150mb

I have 150Mb but i never max it out, i'd be fine with 60Mb but much better ping times instead

I also remember GameSPY being a server browser program and everytimt you loaded it up you got the awesome "Welcome to GameSPY" voice.

I used to be awesome at Counterstrike on my 56k modem connection. I was trialled and got into 4K at the time. Then I upgraded to Comcast/NTL Cable Modem 512K and I just couldn't aim to save my life.

Latency went from 200ms (on Wireplay direct) to about 30-80ms, and that was the end of my Counterstrike days!

Anyone have the dial up connection that had to redial every 2 hours?

1 hour and 55 minutes into an epic Starcraft battle resulted in much keyboard bashing.

first time for me was in 1999 on AOL of all things, my parents had one of those
"only pay whatever a month provided you dont log in outside of these times" deals
played Command and conquer red alert 2 for many many hours on a windows 98 pc, those were the days!!

still had a PS1 back then and remember the launch sounds for that :3

Having to make sure no one was on the phone in order to use the dial-up.

Also waiting 45 minutes so this could download, yet still playing it whenever the bar made any movement so that I could hear just how incredible Victor Wooten was:

I cannot believe I forgot that lovely detail. Still remember ye olde dial up sound though

I was about 11, I remember terrible terrible porn sites.

And flash games, downloaded plenty of those.

Also remember getting basically no internet speed (even by dialup standards) because our phonelines were made in the days of wooden teeth and cave paintings.
