I'm getting myself an iPod for my birthday and was after a few views of owners and those in the know.
Looking at the new (5th gen?) 30Gb in black:

I've heared the black one marks/scratches a lot more easily than the white one. Is this true?

What use is the case that comes boxed with it? Useless or useful?

Are the earphones any good, in your opinion?

What are the major differences between the new 30Gb and the previous one?

Thanks in advance folks :)

Yes, but if looked after they are OK.

The case is nice, much nicer than i got with my zen vision m

Bog standard, nothing awful, but hardly good either.

As far as i know, none. Nothing that the lastest firmware wont sort anyway.

These are just views off using my mates ipod, i dont own one.

ipods with screens are a waste of money imo. I had a shuffle then got a nano and listened to music on it no where near as much. i spent most of my time flicking to tracks i knew.

I lost it and went back to the shuffle and i use it all the time. load with some mixes/albums and just listen away. great device, light, easy to use and very sweat proof!

Depends how much music you have. I certainly need *** screen now as flicking through 2500 tracks with no screen could prove a pain.

however my 512mb shuffle is enough to hold about 7 albums/mixes the rest of my music is on the pc. theres no ipod that can hold it all anyway

if the pod needs updating then it gets wacked it

I've currently got around 3500 tunes and I usually listen to them on random, not much flicking about between tracks here. Plus, the screen will be handy for watching vids etc.

I'm set on an iPod. Was just wondering about the things in my OP, specifically the quality of the supplied case and the differences between the new one and the previous version (though there seems to be only a few quid difference in price so I'm not that bothered).

The newest generation of videos have 3x the video playback length, 20gb more space and also a newer protective screen (iirc).

Definatly go for the newest gen. :)

The black one (u2 edition actually) has been fine for me, yes it marks a little but anything will after a while, i look after it for 6 months then notice it's got marked anyway and give up trying.

well the included case is better than just stuffing it in your pocket for preventing scratches and marks, i'm not keen on many cases though as they make it a lot bigger and mre difficult to just stuff in my pocket.

the earphones, are, in my humble opinion, a pile of carp. It's personal of course, but I started using good earphones and couldn't go back, it's just such a difference. Then again, the money you're talking about for decent ones you'd expect a difference..

the big difference you'll likely notice - better battery life i believe

Yes they do scratch easily. Get a a Skin made by exspect.co.uk top quality fit.

Sound quality of 5.5G is far superior then the Nanos.
