OCUK; Unfortuantely that time has come. I'm getting married! :( No need for the congratulations as to help pay for this I'm going to have to get rid of the s2000! Boooooooo.

So, I'm after a new car which'll do me for the next year. Has to be under £1000 (preferably lower than that!), with nothing needed doing and has a decent amount of tax + mot (year preferable).

I literally have no idea about this end of the market, so any help would be much appreciated.

Any chance you could link me to a few suggestions, so I can get my bearings? Say, 30 miles from TF3 4BX?

ideally, something with a decent size (saloon size) with a decent boot and rear seats (for a change!).

As said, I need it to last me the year, so cheap parts and servicing. As once 2012 is over she'll have to suffer me getting something decent again (ecpect another thread!).

Cheers chaps! :)

Would you like a car with a special compartment she can put your balls in too. You know, for when she wants to take them out of her purse.

;)

Back in 2008, the then to be missus hinted that perhaps I should sell my beloved Aprilia RSV and put the proceeds towards the wedding. I guess the look I gave her each and every time she raised the subject did the trick. We still got married and are very happy together today with a gorgeous baby boy who will be 1 year old in March.

I've still got the RSV. :p

I get the idea of selling for a house but selling for a day? (The cost is the day - marriage itself is more than just a fun day and doesn't need to cost 4 figures if you dont have 4 figures..)

Never understood the idea of getting rid of everything to fund a single day, especially your car.

Congrats and all, but you wouldn't catch me doing that - I'd rather spend a year or two saving for it.

Why the hell would you sell your car to fund a wedding?!?! One day? You clearly love her as you're marrying her, so what does it matter if you have to wait a bit longer to save up, or not spend as much in the first place?! Seems like an utterly bizarre idea to me!

Ha, I bought a car just before I got married!

I did need it though. We had a very low budget wedding, had to do a lot of the prep ourselves, (well she did, I just jot stressed!) but it worked out ok. How much are you hoping to free up on the s2k?

Congrats btw, it's good that you found somebody you'd give up the car for!

Having gotten married last September without spending too much on it (registry office + nice buffet from local deli + big ****up at local pub) I was quite happy we didn't spend more.

It was a very nice day and everyone had a lovely time but it was just the one day.

Cut down on luxury spending like meals out etc. Note down all your finances and be ruthless in stopping needless spending. You can recover much more than you think each month.

Don't sell the car, you'll end up spending more in the long run if you do!

Purely from a financial POV, if you're talking about getting back into something decent in a years time, you'll probably find that it'd be cheaper to pick up a ~6% personal loan than taking a hit selling your s2k, and then another hit buying your replacement toy next year.

If so, I wonder whether the idea of starting married life by actually getting you both into debt, simply to fund 1 day, seems as palatable.
