Your mission, if you choose to accept it!

Savings are going towards the wedding. She has two jobs but no career. Which is what I said.

You said she was fresh out of uni and hadn't started a career, I sad 'job' but meant the same thing. She is obviously just treading water atm until she starts her career. Having done the same thing when I left uni, I remember it being a time where I couldn't commit to anything as my future was uncertain.

We're not rushing into things at all. So leave it.

Umm...
We only got engaged around 6 weeks ago, but she's a bridezilla! So we both haven't had the time to save.

All I'm asking for is car advice around my area and ideas on possible cars. Not a character assissination.

Calm down buddy. There was no character assassination at all

I was trying to give you genuine advice, aimed at giving you the suggestion that you had other options that allowed you to keep the car and have the wedding you want :(

I have bought cheap dailys in an attempt to save money and they always ended up costing me more money and hassle.

My Swift sport (which is a cheap car I mean come on!) has cost me more than any of my other cars I've owned and they were all under £1k to buy. I drove a primera around for over a year which cost me some brake pads and £350 to buy. A mk3 Golf I got for £400 gave me no problems had that for over a year also.

You must have been doing it wrong :p

I was doing it wrong. Running cheap cars whilest trying to maintain them to a pristine standard. Doesn't work for bangereconomics.

I was also very unlucky in things going wrong that could not have been forseen.

Maybe not from you but there has been from others. This isn't a should I get married thread. It's a spec me a car thread. Apologies if I went overboard to you.

Not car related for the most part, just general money related but...

From someone who went through the trauma that is organising a wedding you can shave a lot, and i mean a lot of money off almost every bit if you put in a bit of work yourself.

Things like flowers & the cake for our wedding were going to cost the same as i've paid for a set of coilovers! But if you've got some mad aunt who likes arranging flowers, get them whole sale and get her on it etc.

All i'm saying is put in the leg work on the research of every bit of your wedding so you don't throw money away that can be put to better use later on! Its all too easy to get sucked into thinking 'well thats just the price of [insert random thing] so i'll just have to pay'

By haggling, research, having photographer friends and making stuff ourselves we easily saved ourselves maybe £4k

Didn't look a complete shambles either i don't think!

What sort of miles do you need it to do daily?

OK so you say you are going to/would sell it anyway. I'm another vote for team 'not for one day' affraid.
Cheap run abouts are not worth it, first time something does wrong with it, thats it the whole idea out the window, then what spend the money on a car thats barely worth the repair bill, or scrap it and buy another.
Plus you ARE going to have to mot it, unless you want to get a car with a full year on it then weigh it in! and what are the chances of an old run about clearing an mot without needing a couple of hundred spending on it?

If as you say you were going to sell it get something more practical anyway regardless of getting married AND want to contribute to the wedding, sell it I don't know the details of your car other than what it is so lets say its worth £6-7k thats kinda an opening for those(yours may well be newer) TBH if I got 7 for it I'd spend £4k on a decent reliable practical car and then you've £3k to contribute (which should be the prides parents responsibility anyway), explain that cheap cars just aren't worth it and you need something reliable for work, but you can still chip in £3k.
Also think about you've got a nice car, and going to have to drive a peace of junk for a year-your gonna hate it;)

To me that is very reasonable, and if she throws a fit at it, then I'd seriously ask questions about what she expects from you in the future!

We got married in a week, decided to get wed the week before, we got hitched on valentines day, registery office and to a big pub for food and drinks after, EVERYONE was there who we wanted to be, and all had a great day, it cost sod all, BUT was exactly what we BOTH wanted, neither of us after would have wanted it any other way.
If you can afford it fair play, but....... ;)

I really don't do any mileage really. Probably around 8k a year. I live about 3 miles away from my work. So really nothing across a year :)

She's not going to throw a fit. She's not asked me to get rid of it. I'm doing this of my own back :). Cars worth probably 3k. Mines an early one,

£3k? If thats really all its worth then what on earth is the point? Say you buy a 1500 quid banger and you find it needs a bit doing to it, perhaps a few tyres and some bits and bobs. Suddenly you are almost at £2k and you only got £3k for your S2000, meaning all you've done by going to the faff of advertising, selling, and then re-buying is free up a grand!?

You could put a grand on a credit card if you were that desperate for it for your wedding!

That's a lot of hassle for a £1 / 1.5k, you'd be better off just bouncing it around for a couple of years for interest free credit ;)

Surely it's worth more than £3k ?

This. Unless it's a high mileage CAT D '99, then it should fetch more then £3k...

Have you thought about hanging on to it for a few weeks/months until the sun comes out? IIRC, soft top prices spike a little during the better seasons...

When's the wedding/bill due?

What's the spec/details?

THIS MAN SPEAKETH GOSPEL

Why sell your pride and joy for just £3000 when you know it works?

I didn't realise the S2000 was only worth £3k.

Truth be told I'd finance it some other way.

However I do believe in putting out the boat for a wedding. Nothing stupid like some people like you see, but it is one of the most important days of your life, not to mention a great gathering of people both new and old.

Good luck. :)

Congrats on the engagement...I to have recently got engaged to my gf!

Have a look at MG ZT's...They seem to get very good reviews and also can get them cheap also. Alternatively the rover 75 equivalent!

Yeah but he wants something reliable...

Yeah but he wants something reliable...

I've got one, had it for 5 years now, it's been SUPER reliable - even top gear said the 75 was a good car (so it must be true!) and the ZT is just a 75 with a body kit & nicer stuff!
I've just done a clutch on it, and tbh i'm very impressed with the build quality of the car, mine's an 02 with 88k on it, the underneath is looking very solid, all the bolts have undone with out sheering, everything come off and gone back on without breaking, NO rust issues on the body work. I've seen many newer (07) 'prestige marques' with a lot more issues than my old rover ;)

TOTALLY agree with wait till the weather is good, your not going to sell it for good money now - surely the only people looking now, are those after a bargain for some cool summer driving

It's been one of those cars that you don't want to sell when you think I'll sell it and get something newer - 'what if I buy something thats a money pit? - this has cots me nothing, nothing has gone wrong with it, what if......?" :)
