Your most surprisingly awesome game ever!

half-life - I did not play games, at all. Games were for my little brother. I installed it for him, *sigh*, set it up, made sure it started, on a train thingy, hmm, looks interesting, no I'll let you have a go in a minute...

Over ten years later, I've spent so much time and money on gaming that it's hard to come to terms with - over 1000 hours on TF2 alone, over 50 hours on Plants v Zombies over the last month. Most of the time, it's honestly better than real life.

Far too many to list so I'll go old school (And to stay with titles that I was utterly unsure of at the time and in no particular order) -

Acorn Electron - Trafalgur / Ravenskull / Magic Mushrooms (level creator) / Elite
Spectrum - Driller / Sentinel
Archimedes - Virus
Atari ST - Carrier Command / Magic Fly / Starglider II

Cheers, Paul.

To be honest just looking at my games theres quite a few that ive either seen cheap or just liked the sound of rather than following its production or just going off a review to know what to expect.

The nomad soul: Saw it for a fiver in a random margain bin and remember seeing it mentioned in pc zone so I took a punt and loved it. Great atmosphere with lots of genres all rolled into the mix (although not all successfully). I was hooked at just wandering around aimlessly looking for more Bowie.

Deus Ex: Saw it on a free demo disk and gave it a shot. bought it the following day. Best. Game. Ever.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto: Saw it going cheap at a computer fair and looked like lulz so bought it for £4. Stunningly made game. Funny. Exciting and most of all its just amaingly fun. This also goes for Beyond good and evil too.

Mine goes quite a way back...

My brother and I had an Amiga and used to play Kick Off 2 for hours on end, then one day we got a demo disk on a magazine. There were two games on in, Jaguar XJ220 which we played for a few minutes, and a strange little football game called Sensible Soccer.

We figured it would not be as good as Kick Off 2 but gave it a chance anyway. It was a single goal demo, where the match ended when someone scored, despite this we played it for hours and hours, it was simply a masterpiece of the games world!!!

When the full version came out we purchased it and loved it, we got every update as and when they came out and never looked at Kick off 2 again!

Since then I have spent far far far more hours playing SWOS than any other game, and still play it to this day on my psp!!! Simply the finest game ever!!!

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Played the 1st two in the series (dark forces and JK2), didn't expect jedi coutcast to be so awesome. It made lightsaber combat so much fun :O

I don't play many games but mine would be TF2. When i first saw it I thought it looks a bit childish. I've had it for a while and love it with all the team work involved. :p

Both Riddick Games were better than I thought they would be, especially the "how NOT to escape from Butcher Bay" bit at the beginning of the first.

Oh and another from me. CSS. Came free with HL2 which I really wanted to play. ignored CSS for months after installing it, then when I finally gave it a go I was hooked. 3 years of playing basically it and nothing else + joining a clan for most of that time. Awesome...(especially since it was free)

Quake for me. My first ever experience of FPS online. The moment I started playing it at a friends house I literally became addicted.

Several months later after persuading parents for a decent PC and internet I started my online gaming career.

BF2 was also excellent. Didn't know what to expect and loved it.

I only had my pocket money and so I bought this, which was on the "sold out" range of games that were popular at the time (and I beleive are still going). I remember it because it was like descent, but completely free roaming. Awesome!

Btw if someone could explain to me how to embed the video that would be sweet

I'd have to say Arma II, there were brought for me as a present, had never heard/knew anything about them, but wow, what a truely awesome game, and the expansion is brilliant as well.

Grim Fandango!

I picked it up from my local games shop with the little money that I had, because I fancied trying out some adventure games. When I go home and tried it, I was stunned. I expected it to be average at best, but this game, back in its day, felt to me really unique and amazing over some of the other games of the same genre.

warcraft 3, before that never really experienced online gaming to its full potential. Played it constantly for a week losing 75% of games but loved it and 1 year later was still playing it :D

Alternate Reality by Philip Price on the Atari 8 bit, it was (and still is) the bee's knees to the wasp's nipples. Light years ahead of anything else at that time.

A lot to mention, here goes:

Age of Empires II - think this was the first game I got into online gaming with and spent a lot of time playing it. used to love building the little towns, castles, longbowmen, knights etc :)

Diablo II - again played this a hell of a lot, was thoroughly addicted to this one!

World of Warcraft before it became rubbish - probably the most addicted i've ever been to a game.

Missed out on some of the ones mentioned here such as BF2 but I also enjoyed Defense Grid a lot which I picked up for £3, and Batman: Arkham Asylum. I actually "acquired" Batman: AA first to try it and immediately went and got the game it was so good. Same for BF:BC2.

Clocked in a lot of hours on L4D/L4D2 as well.

Settlers I and Settlers II also sucked me in for hours at a time.

Lastly I would have to say Medieval Total War II. Great game with nice mods, shame about the AI to a degree but some of the battles were pretty epic in that game.

Haven't seen it mentuioned yet - Might & Magic VII. True, most games that get to 7 instalments are worthy franchises, though that certainly doesn't make them automatic successes - IX was horrendous, for example. But I'd not played anything quite the same beforehand, and it had me going for months.

Also, another plug for Evil Genius - fantastic game.

So you purchased, stumbled across or were given all these games and expected/knew very little about each of them before playing? You've had some good luck with games then! Though I might suggest doing some research before purchasing games in future. Such luck can only last so long! ;)
