Your Next Gen Console Wishlist

Following on from the "when can we expect the next generation of consoles" thread.

I thought it would be a good idea for us to post what we want our next gen consoles to offer us :)

What I would like in a Next Gen console?

A decent amount of ram, 1GB would do nicely.
If Hard Drives are the future of consoles, at least use 7200rpm models... or better yet, lets move to Solid State Drives.
Both of these should speed loading times, which are still lagging behind PC's.
Gigabit LAN and Wireless N capabilities.
Generally they should be smaller than current Gen - the Wii may be too small for some of the features they'd pack... but personally the 360 and the PS3 are on the large side.
Silence.... I can't emphasize that enough. Good quality, quite/silent fans that push a lot of CFM don't exactly cost an arm and a leg. And put in a quiet optical drive for goodness sake.
Slot-Loading Drives... they're wonderful inventions, and it's annoying they're not easy to get hold of for PC's
A stable frame-rate and at the minimum games should be putting out 720p
A way of not having to put of with the 10 year old kids that think they're awesome at a game, you beat them and then put up with abuse for it.... heck I'd like a way of not having to play them at all personally.
Backwards compatibillity with this generation of consoles as standard, regardless of what version of a console you buy or whether your in Europe or the US.

Finally... a sensible price for the console and all peripherals.
Now I don't mind paying extra for something if it's worth it, but I don't expect to pay close to £100 more just for a larger HDD... when if I bought a regular HDD from an etailer like OcUK it would cost me £25.
£30-£40 for controllers is also ridiculous.

Feel free to add post yours, or shoot mine down :p

The Wii has a lot of that alread; small, quite, cool, slot loading drive, reasonable prices for console and games, wireless included, decent amount of ram relative to CPU/GPU, solid state storage built in.

I'd like to see:

- 1 SKU. Seriously.
- 1 control pad design with built-in rechargeable battery and charging lead. Good triggers and a good D-Pad.
- Blu-Ray and a 1TB hard-drive. Start putting ALL games online for download.
- Backed by a decent, unifying online service with dedicated servers.
- LAN and 802.11n WLAN.
- Backwards compatibility.
- Web-browser, video playback and music playback. It's not much effort and modern consoles are more than capable of these things.

Sony to care about us in every way instead of treating us, and America to a lesser extent, like ****.

Why the hate towards Sony? Nintendo and Microsoft both screw Europeans just as bad. Remember Super Smash Bros? Seen how cheap Xbox 360 games are in Japan/Korea?

Not the same Tunney. Nintendo are bad, but Sony take it to extremes.

Look how much longer we've waited for the PS2, PS3 and PSP compared to those countries.. combine the times together and it's over 2 years!
Sony release onto the PSN and then make us wait around 5 months for some games at times (I believe this was the case with PAIN or CAC for example).
Sony base their pad size on Asian hands, smaller hands than everywhere else in the world.
Sony open a Home beta.. but not to Europe.

Sony are without doubt the worst out there, but silly Europeans keep lapping it up.

Microsoft on the other hand had a Worldwide launch (bar Australia), they release things onto the Live Marketplace at the same time, or within a very short period of time for the same price.

The only thing Sony have really done positive is give online gaming for free.

The developers of said hardware work along-side the developer, fine. Opening it up to all peripherals paves the way to people getting mice and keyboards working.
I'm also against full installation of games.
I'm also against 1080p with full AA and AF, the impact on the system is huge much more than people think. Get it at 720p with AA and AF on all systems and a consistent frame-rate is MUCH more important. We've just leaped into HD, leaping into FullHD already would be incredibly foolish.

I do think by the time those consoles are out the gpu they will have for them will easy do 1080p at 60fps with loads of aa and af, going on what out for the pc now like the 4850 and 9800( never mind the 280/4870),never mind what will be out in 12 to 18 months.

They need to add quite a lot of ram and not cut corners to much.

Why would you want the battery to be built in? The 360's method of letting you choose between swappable battery packs, either official or with regular batteries, is surely a better idea?

It's been mentioned before, I think there were more 60fps games LAST generation in comparison to this one. The impact of 1080p is huge (over 720p), having 60fps on top of that is a massive leap.

In terms of numbers it doesn't sound much, in practice it's actually a phenomenal difference.

Indeed it is. I've never understood why some people in the Sony crowd use this as a positive for the PS3 :p.

You can have small or powerful, not both with reliability.

Of course you can have a powerful but small console that's reliable?

The cost would rise to justify this, but you can't just blanket the whole thing.

A CPU/GPU with good stepping that produces a small amount of heat and low power usage, that is still a powerful chip is entirely possible.

I don't see how having the choice gives any benefit. It only creates a larger, more expensive control pad.

Mobile phones, digital cameras, mp3 players et al moved towards custom rechargeable batteries a long time ago. Why are control pads lagging so far behind? Do you miss having the choice of sticking four AA batteries into your mobile phone?

Microsoft has got it half right by released a play and charge kit (obviously at extra expense to the consumer) but recharging the AA batteries for my Wii is a pain in the butt. Especially when they die halfway into a 4-player Mario Kart marathon.

You can use rechargeable batteries in the Xbox360.
You can remove the batteries from MP3 players, Mobile Phones and Digital Cameras, you can't from your PS3 controllers, so when the batter dies your pad dies and you have to splash out £35 for a new one.

The Wii, as you say, isn't great having to use AA's, but at the same time, you can replace them when they stop working, same as the Xbox360.

Depends how you look at it ;) I've always seen as a negative.

How could you ever see it as a negative

It's free, And with ever update it comes closer to live.

Anyways, My wants.

Bluray or comparable media, With a drive with high speed but low sound.

Hard drive, But a good size, That's not going to keep people having to delete things to make room.

A great deal of system RAM, Not a just adequate amount.

A GPU with plenty of Memory and speed. Not a gimped last moment decision.

A powerful CPU like the cell, BUT with a fantastic SDK for developers.

Completely Free online play, But retaining the high quality of Live, Dedicated Servers.

Silent Running machine, With adequate cooling measure.

A system that has been tested under the harshest conditions, To such a point, It carries a 5 year warranty.
