Your picks for best sound design in a game?

Elite Dangerous really is a benchmark for sound. But, they highpassed the audio to take out the really subsonic stuff which narked me rotten. :(

What do you mean by understand it? The point of it or just the game mechanics? Plenty of help to be had by the community :)

That's cool and I appreciate that. I remember taking part in the thread when it first launched. I just never felt like I made any progress or understood how to do so.

I had the basic controls down etc that wasnt a problem but I just never grasped how to make serious wedge and actually move on to bigger/better ships etc. I should replay it as I imagine its come quite far

I'll add the Remedys Control has pretty awesome sound. You get an ability to pick up and throw objects like the gravity gun in half life. If the object is behind you, the sound comes whizzing from behind and past your ear to Jesse's hand. Really effective.

"Sound design" in games nowadays is nowhere near as exciting as before hardware accelerated sound was nerfed by Microsoft.

Sad, soo sad :(

Anyone who played Battlefield 2 with realtime rendered audio will understand where I am coming from.

Hardware Acceleration/Abstract Layer for sound or easier to say Direct Sound is back in Windows from 8 (AFAIR) but not sure why it has not taken off again with soundcards still having the likes of Creatives SoundCore chips which are fully hardware based.

It also mentions:

DirectSound's and DirectMusic's hardware interfaces to sound card drivers are not implemented.

That is the problem.

Typos grrr

Yes but that was Win 8 we are now on Win 10 (Win 8.1 and skipping 9), I am not sure what they are playing at and I do not think sound "sounds" as good as it did before like on my old SoundBlaster Live 5.1 and Audigy cards.
