Your Pixel can now run on wall outlet power alone

With the December Pixel Feature Drop, Google rolled out a handy 80% charging limit for Pixel phones. It allows you to extend the lifespan of your Pixel's battery by limiting its charge to 80%. It turns out this is not the only battery lifespan-extending measure that Google has introduced with Android 15 QPR1. The update also adds support for bypass charging on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series, enabling these devices to run directly on power provided by the charger, bypassing the battery completely.

I don't have a pixel but i thought it might have been of interest.

What a completely pointless 'feature', why would anyone charge their phone to 80% or whatever then keep it plugged in a socket.

Surprised it wasn't Apple that came out with it and tried to claim it's some amazing new thing.

Some people use their phone to cast to TV or sending music, etc. this way they can avoid running the battery down and maintain better battery health - holding the battery near full charge due to constant use plus plugged in isn't good for many types of battery.

So you've never plugged your phone in and just left it, overnight or otherwise?
I think their are two kinds of people, those who want a quick 20 min charge that gives near 80-100% battery life so charging while eating lunch or a shower say. Others such as yourself who leave it plugged in and want adaptive charging to prolong the battery.

It seems quite odd to me to want to offer hyper charging on a lot of mobiles to then allow you to slow charge overnight or to 80%.

I can see how it helps maintain the battery health by slowly charge the device while its being used.

Either way this is a choice as it isn't being forced upon you.

Charging at night.
Plugged into the car when using it as a satnav.

Definitely not a pointless feature. A must have for people that keep their phones for as many years as possible.

It’s a phone plugged into the wall. It’s no longer mobile - it’s a landline.
By that logic a tablet, a laptop a car isn't mobile because it needs plugging in to charge!

I feel your just being deliberately obtuse.

It's a great future one I will make full use of.

Let's take driving as my number one example. It's plugged in reaches 80% would you then unplug it and wait for it to discharge and then plug it back in again. Me id rather leave it plugged in so when I do unplug it it's at 80%. Seems a lot easier all while looking after the battery.

Oh I absolutely am because this thread is hilarious - it’s only slightly less dull than this one on a similar subject:

But anyway, the car analogy doesn’t work because I can’t use my car for its intended purpose while it’s plugged in/charging. You can still use all of the devices listed while charging as normal. The only thing I do make use of is using the charging supply to precondition the battery and cabin when it’s cold so I’m still setting off at the limit I’ve set rather than using some of it to make the car warm before I’ve even gone anywhere.

If I screwed my car battery that much it would cost tens of thousands to replace - a new iphone battery costs 80 quid fitted at an Apple Store…

You've got a low threshold for hilarity. It's a feature that has some niche use cases and for those cases it's very handy if you want your battery to survive. If those cases don't apply then you're right it probably seems totally pointless.

Yes I do - it’s about having perspective on life about things that actually matter and things that really don’t.

Guess which category this feature comes under (in my opinion)…

A feature that makes my very expensive device last significantly longer doesn't matter?

I'll send you the invoice for the replacement in that case

Great for tether users who only have their mobile as an internet source.
