RTS games have always been a favorite of mine since I was a boy, and a recently rediscovered the genre after buying the "Relic Pack" on steam which included Dawn of War and Company of Heroes.

These games I played pretty much as they were released:

Dune 2 (1992) - First and greatest, spent many an hour playing ;)
Command & Conquer (1995) - Another genre defining title, great soundtrack.
Red Alert (1996) - I found it dissapointing.
Settlers II (1996) - Very detailed game.
Age of Empires (1997)
Age of Empires: Rise of Rome (1998)
Dune 2000 (1998) - Dated looking and dissapointing Remake of the classic title.
Age of Empires II: Age of Kings (1999) - Genre Classic
Age of Empires II: The Conquerors (2000)
Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun (2000) - Dipping my toes back into the CnC franchise, again not too great.
Emperor: Battle For Dune (2000) - Better than the previous remake, but still not great.

Games tried/played but not bought/didnt get into:

Total Annihilation (1997)
Starcraft (1998) - Highly rated, fun multiplayer, but didnt hook me.
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002)
Settlers: Heritage of Kings, The (2005)

These games Ive tried so far in 2009:

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (2004) - Having a great deal of fun playing through this game and its expansions.
Warhammer 40,000: Winter Assault (2005)
Company of Heroes (2006)
- This one i need to try more.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade (2006)
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Soulstorm (2008)
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II (2009)

What is everyone else's RTS Timeline?
.
Are there other great games out there Ive managed to miss that I should checkout?

"Starcraft (1998) - Highly rated, fun multiplayer, but didnt hook me."

Hehe this is ironic. I've found its the only RTS that's hooked me really and I only played it for the first time about a year ago. There is something pure and intuitive about it.

Oh and if it counts I really enjoyed the single player mission in World in Conflict. It was just a simple, cinematic-type experience and I do enjoy that from time to time. But I can't really imagine going back to it.

I definitely had some fun with DoW and expansions packs too.

Hate to be a moron but these aren't really RTSs!

EDIT: Same applies to Yantorsen ^^

Civ is turn based - and that's why I much prefer it. You get to mull over your choices :D .

Settlers 3 - never liked strategy games until my grandparents bought this for me, and I was hooked from then on.....

StarCraft
AoE2
Commandos
MechCommander
Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds
MechCommander 2
DoW
Company of Heroes
C+C3
DoW2

civ may not be but TT, RCT, Pharaoh and C3 definitely are real time. But I guess the 2 tycoons are sims... But C3 and Pharaoh are definitely RTS imo, you get attacked in real time in em and although the goal is to build cities, you can say the same for Settlers...

I guess its all a question of semantics. Probably most games happen in real time and have strategy :D .

Played:

CnC Gold
CnC Red Alert
WarCraft II
Total Annihilation
StarCraft

Then nothing else seriously since then as they all failed miserably in multiplayer compared to SC.

Starcraft's very unique races were a definate plus point when most of the other RTS had samey opposing factions, CnC especially. I'll probably like everyone else try out SCII when it arrives :D

I havent heard of World in Conflict, but it does look rather interesting.

Btw heres a link that may help folks remember which titles they have played: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology_of_real-time_strategy_games ;)

WiC is prolly one of the only few RTS games I really disliked. I guess I just don't like games without a top down ( general statement before anyone says wic is top down lol) view or base building.

Age of Empires
Starcraft
Age of Empires 2
Warcraft 3
Command and Conquer Generals
Sim City 3
Dawn of War (alll expansions)
Company of Heroes

Command & Conquer - :)
Red Alert - :D
Age of Empires - :)
Starcraft - :)
WarCraft II - xD
Age of Empires II - :D
Red Alert 2 - :|
Warcraft III - :D
CnC Generals - :/
Company of Heroes - :)
Red Alert 3 - :(

Mainly just singleplayer, i used to play warcraft2 abit on wireplay years ago tho.

How the hell am I supposed to remember? :D

I do remember playing Dune 2 until it was time for school the next day. Those were loooooooong school days :D

-Cannon Fodder (Pretty tough/frustrating game, I think I got stuck on this level where you had to wizz round really fast in a jeep)
-Red Alert (borrowed off a friend, very impressive)
-Z (cutscenes were better than the game!)
-C&C (Disappointing compared to RA, I couldn't really get into the whole GDI/NOD thing)
-Warcraft 2 (Nice game with a good sense of humour. Resource gathering was a bit cumbersome/frustrating at times though)
-Red Alert 2 (Won this in a Quakeworld competition. Very good campaign, and I used to play co-op with my housemate at uni)
-Warcraft 3 (seemed a bit cartoony and overly scripted, I ought to try it again sometime though as I didn't get very far)
-C&C Generals (Fairly average, certainly not offensive)
-Dawn of War (Fabulous. Campaign is a little short but very good while it lasts)
-Winter Assault (A bit lacklustre aside from a couple of very fast paced missions such as where you keep having to relocate your base)
-Company of Heroes (Got stuck on the 5th mission. Very impressive graphics)
-Dark Crusade (Solid gameplay but a bit too easy to get bogged down on some maps)
-C&C3 & Kane's Wrath (Surprisingly good. Only weakness really is an overemphasis on scripted triggers which don't always reward good play)
-Soulstorm (Probably the best RTS I've played - good selection of races/units, and it manages to give a more focussed approach to the conquest mode with a bit of storyline)
-RA3 (Too cartoony, I thought I was going to love this as I'm a fan of both RA2 and C&C3)
-Dawn of War 2 (Fun game but it's definitely a step backwards from Soulstorm in some areas)

There's probably a couple of games I've missed out that didn't get much in the way of playtime. I tried Homeworld 2 for example but basically only did the tutorial.
