Your RTS Timeline

Think this is mine though may not be in the right order or all of them.

Think nearly all the CnC games.
AoE2
Empire Earth I and II
Mechcommander
Metal Fatigue
Shogun: Total War
Company of Heroes Demo
Supreme Commander and FA

1996 Red Alert 1 : Classic

1997 Settlers 2 : Epic settlers franchise begins.
1996 Dungeon Keeper
1997 Constructor - bizarre game where construction teams battle it out, the foremans bash in hedges with their spirit levels, undesirables terrorize the neighbourhood and if you lose they bury you alive!
1997 Age of Empires : Classic RTS, most RTS's are clones of this masterpiece.
1998 Settlers 3 : Disappointing
1998 Populous 3 The Beginning - The first 3D RTS and a classic game. Very good.
1999 Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds - massively underrated RTS, classic.
1999 Age of Empires 2 - Classic, one of the best RTS's ever made.
1999 Dungeon Keeper 2
1999 Pharaoh
2000 Earth 2150 : Best 3D engine of the time, bad AI.
2000 Cossacks: European Wars - The best RTS ever made, nothing comes close to the complexity of a peacetime war.
2000 Age of empires 2: The Conquerors - best expansion pack ever, bar none
2001 Cossacks : Art of War - Cossacks just got even better
2001 American Conquest - same engine as cossacks, very disappointing
2005 Age of Empires 3 - Excellent, impressive graphics and best online play to date.
2007 Settlers 2 10th Anniversary - excellent 3D remake
2008 Age of Empires 3: Asian Dynasties - solid expansion
2009 Red Alert 3 - Excellent graphics, better than its predecessor RA2.

Ah, Age of Empires II... Had some good times with that. If it wasn't for the modding community slowly dieing I'd probably still be playing it.

I haen't played a lot of PC games recently, probably because I'm on a 6 year old laptop. I tried CnC: Tiberium Wars, which wasn't bad, but nothing special. I've played quite a few CnC games, and my favourite was Tiberian Sun, when I was about 7 and a mate gave it me. Of course, I sucked at it, but it was good fun. Then again, when you're 7, anything is good fun.

It's a shame that all these new games just seem to be lacking something. Great graphics and gameplay are all good, but when a game comes, and goes, I don't miss it like I do with the classics. I don't know what it is, there's just... something. Like Cultures 2. It's a pretty poor game, but I miss it.

I think World in Conflict is the first RTS games that has really broken new ground for years imo. While not a great multiplayer game and I probably won't go back to it, it had one of the most enjoyable single player campaigns I've ever played.

Powermonger on the amiga 1990 odd.
Prince, again, on the amiga.
Then none till C&C on the the PS1.
Then the total war games on the PC.

I remember having (in no particular order);

Command & Conquer
Red Alert
Red Alert 2
Age of Empires 2
Empire Earth 2
Earth 2160
Star Wars: Empire at War
Battle for Middle Earth
Battle for Middle Earth 2
BFME: Rise of the Witch King
Dawn of War 1
DOW: Winter Assault
DOW: Dark Crusade
Dawn of War 2
Medieval Total War
MTW: Barbarian Invasion
Rome Total War
Medieval 2 Total War
MTW2: Kingdoms
Company of Heroes
COH: Opposing Fronts
Sumpreme Commander
SC: Forged Alliance
World in Conflict
Sins of a Solar Empire

Thats about it I think, I'm sure I'll remember some more obscure ones though

Not sure of the years:

Dune 2
Warcraft 2
Command & Conquer
C&C Red Alert
Starcraft
AOE
Dungeon Keeper
Mechcommander
Mechcommander 2

Stopped liking RTS a loooong time ago.

Could not tell you in the order mate but here it is

CNC Red alert 1
Age of Empire 1
The Settlers
The Settlers 2
The settlers 3
The Settlers rise of an empire

can you class Black and white as one?

Age of Empire 2

Company of heroes mate, probably one of the best feature filled RTS's ever.

Many RTS games I have enjoyed (in nor particular order).

Starcraft, Total Annihilation, red alert 1 & 2, Dungeon Keeper 1&2, Company of heroes, warcraft 1-3, starcraft, Age of empires 1 & 2 (especially 2), Supreme commander.

I can't remember the full list, but I think the first RTS game for me was 'populous'
There's not been many games that have captured my imagination like that one did.

in order:
C&C origional
Star Wars Supremacy (I actually thought this was a pretty sweet game)
Red Alert 2
Star Wars Galatic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns (a really good game)
Supreme Commander
Starcraft
Company of Heroes
Sins of a Solar Empire
Red Alert 3

I haven't played many RTS's though the ones I have, Im pretty good at. RTS's is my 2nd fav genre ^^

Despite having computers for nearly 25 years () I've only recently got into RTS games. Think the first was Rome: Total War. Then CoH and SupCom at about the same time. Then WiC and Sins of a Solar Empire. I have a love-hate relationship with RTS games. Either they grab me straight away and I love them to bits (especially SupCom which I've played more than any other game ever) or I absolutely loath them......like WiC and Sins :p

Red Alert: Got it in 1998 with both expansions, awesome game, still play it to this day, annoyingly though it fails to run on vista and crashes now and again on xp :( Other strategy games bought and played are roughly in order:

Age of Empires
Tiberian Sun
Command & Conquer Gold
Total Annihilation
Total Annihilation: Kingdoms - Was very disappointed with this
Red Alert 2
Railroad Tycoon II (Awesome game for about half an hour...)
C&C: Generals (Not a bad game, but too different from the rest of the C&C franchise to be a "C&C" game)
Dawn of War + Expansions
Company of Heroes
C&C3

There are others, but these are the only ones that really spring to mind

Command & Conquer
Total Annihilation
Total Annihilation: Kingdoms
Total Annihilation
Red Alert
Total Annihilation
String of disapointing RTS.
Supreme Commander
