Your Top 5 Guitar Riffs?

He had a point though, Metal in general is poop. I'm not going to say every metal song is rubbish because I haven't listened to them all (Thank god!). Metal is basically Hard Rock without the groove. Whilst I can appreciate the skill and technique I find it dull and soulless.

I agree with you tbh

I find that it doesn't. Sounds very bland to me.

Ah, the wonder of having different tastes!

Yeah it is subjective, and I'm not a massive fan of coldplay, but it does have a lot more emotion than any metal, most metal is very dry and repetitive and samey.

Not at all! If I like a song I hear on the radio, I don't care what genre it falls in I like it,

Same here.
About a month ago I heard some great heavy pop music, tracked it down and bought the live DVD.
The young lady is called Miley Cyrus and I couldn't give a stuff what others think.
The music is great, her band is brilliant and the show is excellent.
I then found out about Hannah Montana but still the songs are really well crafted.

I'll like her even more once she's legal!

And as to Metal, it does depend what you define as Metal. What are Queens of The Stone Age? A lot of their songs are heavy but I'd class them more as hard rock, plus they've got that all-important 'groove' I mentioned. In the immortal words of Keith Richards :- 'When it comes to Rock'n'Roll it's all about the roll, man!'

It was only after I found out who she was but it doesn't make it any less brilliant.

ah k, its just the words "heavy pop music" made me think twice.

Yea rock or hard rock, whatever, but not Metal. I suppose different people have different interpretations of "heavy"

Like away, check the date of birth.

This is a really tough ask to get 5 guitar riffs out of the millions there are but somewhere in there I'd have:

Van Halen - Panama
Derek & The Dominos - Layla
Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
The Kinks - All Day And All Of The Night
Fleetwood Mac - Albatross

If I think about it a bit more I'll probably change all of them, it's a tough enough choice not including Freebird as having one of the greatest riffs.

a few niceys

white stripes - Instinct Blues
arctic monkeys - old yellow bricks
coltrane - bass riff in ascent
hendrix's version of killing floor
babyshambles - carry on up the morning intro

I wasn't really a fan of that version, preferred Zeppelin's version to be honest.

ooh havent heard zeppelin play it. was it released on CD?
best hendrix version ive got is live @ Paris '68, part of the stages box set, but come to think of it howlin' wolfs version is pretty damn amazing too!
