And actually, they are 'doing it rite' - the tradition is to collect money to pay for the fireworks on the 5th Nov itself, and used to start a couple of weeks before Guy Fawkes Night.

Tradition is you have a guy, and you say "Penny for the guy."
 
We used to get scratty kids come round with an old pushchair, that usually contains a sibling or friend and say "pound for the guy?", which resulted in me staring and just saying "NO!".

Since we've had the dogs their barking usually scares them away :)
 
This is the modern version.

What happens is, they promise they'll get a guy at some point in the future and based on this you give them the money now.

Same thing with banks, loans and repayments :)
 
I don't doubt that they were going to use the money to buy fireworks and set things on fire. But they would probably be shooting the fireworks at each other, and setting people's bins on fire.
