Hi

I'm looking at getting a new digital camera in the 100-150 range (although i can go a bit higher).
It should be easy to use (or relatively easy;)).
Have an optical zoom
Be at least 3mp preferably 4+
Use standard batteries - not a proprietry battery pack

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm looking at the
Samsung Digimax A7 7MP (£165)
Samsung Digimax A50 5.0MP Digital Camera (£100)
Canon 520 (140)
CANON PowerShot A530 (145)
Fuji FinePix A500 5.1MP Digital Camera (130 - with a 64mb card)

Thanks :)

Wolfy,

Check out your usual online retailers, and anything that catches your eye have a read of the review on http://www.steves-digicams.com/ very in-depth and professional.

From my own experience, Canon, Fuji and Nikon are the brands you want to be after. Are you just after a quick snapper, will it mainly be used in 'Auto' mode? Nikons are generally pretty quick at starting up and being able to shoot quickly, non SLR digicams tend to have a boot up time before they can actually take a picture, and even then when you actually press the shutter then can be upto a second before the shot is taken (hard to judge those action shots) this time has been better on the Nikon digicams I have used.

I don't really like Sony digicams (design, feel and menu systems) but optically they are quite nice with Carl Zeiss glass pretty much accross the board. Canon and Nikon are both optically excellent.

Pick out a few and have a play in your local camera shop before making a choice. How it feels and works with you is very important. As with computers it's probably wise to get the best camera you can afford, as things move fast with anything digital.

Personally on your budget I'd get the Canon A610 :)

I also used to look here, but does anyone else find his reviews, though compreensive, often tend to have almost verbatim conclusions from one camera to the next? I could never really make out any differences in the reviews that would sway my decisions between cameras. My guess was this is how he manages to get so many reviews done and posted. Though there are fewer reviews, the ones on DPReview tend to be more balanced and better at assessing the pros and cons of each camera in a fair way.

Just my observation......

I found Imaging Resource to be pretty good when looking for reviews.

Whenever anyone asks me this I always say to pick a price range and buy the Canon :)

Agreed. Even my brothers £100 Canon happy snappy thing is fantastic for what you are getting for the price.

1gb, given the 512mb cards were only about a 6-7 less I thought i'd get the 1gb card (i think it should work ok from what i've read).

The A610 manual says you can make movies up to 1GB in length, which suggests it's good with cards that big.

Man, a gig... That'll hold about 400 photos at max res and max quality.

Just a quick reply :)

Got the 610 this morning, and whilst I haven't had much time to play with it yet, so far i'm impressed.
It's faster than the A60 (by a mile), seems to have a nice picture (although i've only taken indoor shots), and thanks to the adjustable angle of the display i'm managing to get some suprise shots of the mutt (mum's wanted a nice big picture of him for a while, so i'm trying to get one when he's not always looking at the camera).

Von, aye, that's the idea :)
They are safer on the memory card than on my PC (although i do back up from camera to PC, then to DVDR on a regular basis).
