This is something that has been bothering me since YouTube and other sites have converted over to HTML5 (Which is great due to Adobe's Flash Player security issues and other issues) BUT are we taking an Audio quality hit for this new standard ? Well let's test it together and see what we think.

I'm going to concentrate on Audio quality in this post only as Video also has some issues which I will not cover in this thread but may open a new thread regarding that after we test together the Audio fidelity of HTML5 and Adobe's Flash Player.

The testing I will be doing and hope you will duplicate to test yourselves to see what you think. The testing will require Mozilla Firefox and using a addon to control when Flash or HTML5 is used on YouTube in Firefox (Or use a browser that allows you to pick between Flash and HTML5 Playback in YouTube).

The Addon is called YouTube Flash Video Player 41.0 For Firefox:-

More about the Addon here :-

The Firefox add-on YouTube Flash Video Player gives you an option to select which video player you want to use on the video hosting site.

Now here are some nice test videos that will show the Audio issues between Flash Player and HTML5 (Of course use your own videos too to test and songs that you know how they should sound and how they actually sound between Flash & HTML5). They are pretty high quality for YouTube Videos and have a large dynamic range and a wide frequency range.

Now please remember there is a volume difference between Flash and HTML5 so do remember to try adjust the volumes to about same levels but the real test is to listen to the Low Range, Mid Range and the High Range of each format. Then state which you prefer or think sounds more natural, also listen out for the sound stage.

I will add my opinion later as I don't want to influence you in any way :).

Thanks and hope you find it fun testing this yourselves.

Are you aware that 1080p and up, audio and video are now delivered on different steams? This is why download scripts now stop at 720p. This is a relatively recent development. I am not sure how this affects audio quality, it might be worth doing tests with video below that quality. On train at moment so can't look at your videos.

I think yt allow a maximum of 192bit mp3 or aac.
